Interesting. Never thought about it. I just can't listen to demos though.

Something interesting in the same vein is Kirk's solo on Unforgiven. If you watch the year and a half documentary, you can see him winning a debate with Rock over it. I'm glad he kept it as is.

The reality is that Lars is a very average drummer.
This just isn't true. I will agree that he might not be the most technically proficient or most virtuoso drummer around. But he has written some extremely interesting parts.

The poster who mentioned One is spot on - to this day, I think it's one of the most uniquely written drum lines of all time. It's creative and slightly off-kilter - and it definitely is integral to the song.

Also, he said something years ago that didn't make sense to me, but I actually do finally get it now. It was something about how he likes to "sit behind the beat". How can a drummer not actually be defining the beat?!? Well, go listen to Ronnie and you'll see what he means. He really does seem to be a fraction slower than the song itself - and the effect is an ultra-deep groove.

I think some masturbatory drummer (Dream Theater, Tool, etc.) would have ruined Metallica. Lars plays a perfect part.

James Hetfield is one of the great musical geniuses of our time and Metallica is one of the great acts of rock history...James keeps Lars for a reason.

I've been saying this for years. Most people call it blasphemy.

He is the least talented member that band has ever had, including Ron McGovney. Imagine if he was as good on drums as Cliff, Dave and Kirk are on their's. Had he not had some business sense, he'd be gone.

"I think at one point or another, we were pissed off at Lars, around maybe 1985 or something. We were unhappy, and we might have grumbled something to someone. And then that person might have picked up on it and made it something a lot bigger than it actually was."

Hammett and late bassist Cliff Burton reportedly told Ian that "they couldn’t take being in the band with [Ulrich]  anymore and were done putting up with him," Ian wrote in his autobiography, I'm the Man. "I didn’t ask why they were gonna kick Lars out. I figured it was because they wanted a better drummer, but apparently there was also a lot of business-related stuff going on behind the scenes they weren’t thrilled with."

You take that back right the frick now! Carey is a saint. I've no doubt he could have made some amazing stuff with James.

Lars just fits the bill. He's able to do what James needs him to do. But his drums have never "made" a song like Danny does. The double bass in One is just him copying the guitar lines. The only song that really sees him do something extra is Dyer's Eve. Now imagine if he could actually play that and use double bass on the verses of tons of other songs.

He's there for a reason. Someone else mentioned business sense and he is a ruthless count when it comes to that. Napster was his baby. Not that I totally blame him and I understand where he came from on that. He also has been big in the art. He's the guy that can handle the other stuff that let's a band be a band and lets James write some of the most iconic riffs ever.

I want to hear Metallica with James and Cliff and Carey on drums now. At the end of the day we all still love 'em and I can't wait until they tour again. Hopefully it'll be an arena tour again.

Why is everyone so fixated on Dyer's Eve - because it's fast?

I love the drumming on Eye of the Beholder (and that entire album).

Yeah, because it's the only song that I know of where he used double bass on a verse. AJFA is my favorite album by all of them though.

Presumably by "double bass" in this example you mean the rapid fire, continual 8th notes throughout? Because he uses plenty of double bass in other songs in verses.

He basically turn Enter Sandman into a groove, but he still does a good job.

Cool.
Now have him do Pneuma.
