Bump. Wanted to see if there are any updates. I just picked up a cheap ukelele off amazon for $30. If i make progress and enjoy playing, I'll look to upgrade to a quality instrument within the year. Figure i can learn on this and the kids can play around with it too. If it breaks, no big deal. I will be doing youtube lessons. Any lessons recommended or any i should avoid?

Pick up something unique. Piano and drums are always agood choice but It seems everyone I know plays guitar. I've been playing guitar for years but would rather be playing harmonica or piano, since they're different. Im looking at buying a lap steel soon but that may not be a beginners instrument.

Probably mentioned already but electric guitar can be played and practiced more quietly. Plug it into a device and headphones and only YOU know how bad you are.
I started acoustic and while I don't regret it I realize it was a mistake. Bad chords and dead strings are LOUD on acoustic.
Electric can cost more in equipment to start. But easier to sound better more quickly. Think Smoke on The Water. Acoustic I've always heard will make you a better player in the long run. Hope I'm right.
Drums are cool but tough. Can't take your drums on vacation or to the beach for a weekend. Drums need room. They need A ROOM. easier to play with people on guitar. Even if you suck you can strum and blend in with people. Drums? Not so much. 20 mins to set up your kit and be bad. ??

Good bump timing
I played guitar with some degree of seriousness from about 10-18 but never took lessons or the like. I wasn't a good guitarist, but I was competent enough that I played in some bands and had acquired 6-7 guitars and some nice tube amps at one point.
I ended up selling all but 2 (including the amps), primarily for beer money and fraternity dues in college. Sadly that included a Texas Special Roadhouse I really loved.
Anyway, went to my folks this past weekend and decided to haul back the D-28 (wisely my folks ensured I didn't sell it too) they bought for me nearly 15 years ago. Thinking about giving it another go if I can find the time.

I was 40 when I decided to learn how to play an acoustic guitar.I'm 55 now and that was probably the best decision I've ever made.

I am 46 and started playing 3 months ago. Learning chords is pretty easy. Strumming patterns are harder than learning chords. I am now trying to stretch my hand to play 3-4 fret chords better as well as trying to play barred chords. I work on scales a little each day as well. Very glad I finally did this as I put it off for so many years. I am very happy with my progress so far and can now play some of my favorite songs like Southern Cross and Horse with No Name pretty good.

Rhythm was kind of the last thing to come to me.
I'd play something and I'd get,"That sounds good. What is it?"
The only Barre Chords that I use a lot are the 2 finger B an B-flat(I believe).
I watched an interesting You-Tube Video called the D,C,G Trick.Guy plays 40 Songs that are D,C.G.And in that order.

Let me recommend one of the squier thinline telecasters, these are definitely NOT junk. You can buy a new one at guitar center for about 500 bucks, and have the store do a good setup on it,especially adjusting the intonation. It has quality pick ups,but the volume and tone pots are a bit weak, you can change them out for good ones for under 25 bucks, you will love this guitar. It has a semi-hollow body,so you can play without even plugging in,if you are in a quiet place.
I have one of these, and have upgraded the pots, and replaced the plastic nut with a bone one,and it is my favorite electric to pick up and play.
