About 6-7 years ago I was gigging pretty heavily and bought an Egnater Tweaker 112 Combo amp/cab. I played it for a good three years then moved and stopped playing electric as much. Fast-forward to now, I am trying to bring it out of retirement. I went to practice last week and the amp sounds really muddy and has a noticeable buzz with the master volume up over 60%. Even with running my guitar straight into the amp with no pedals. I tried replacing all of my preamp tubes but the noise is still there.

Anyone have any other potentials solutions before taking it in? I don't think its the powertubes because there is no volume fluctuation but I have no idea.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Considering the first thing a good tech or service center is going to do is swap ALL tubes to see if the problem persists, I'd change the power tubes. Particularly if you're running EL84s - when I gigged my Soldano Astroverb at 60-70 percent years and years ago, it would go through 84s like a fat kid through cookies.

Regardless of the PT type, fire it up and see if one or more of the PTs are a different color, particularly orange, or void of any internal color. Dead giveaway you have a PT problem.

I can see one glow orange through the amp grill. They are 6v6s. They have to be replaced in pairs correct?

Eta: one is glowing orange at the base and one has no color so that sounds like it may be the issue.

Hate to hijack here but was wondering what you recommend for my tele. Holds tune very well but notes on high strings are a bit sharp when fretted. If i'm using a capo, I have to tune down a quarter step or so to be in tune. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you need to intonate.

But it sounds like it’s an intonation issue. Should be able to adjust the bridge on the tele to fix

It sounds like your tele has medium jumbo to jumbo frets, and your capo is squeezing the strings too tight and making strings go sharp under the clamp. Get a capo with a matching fingerboard radius and adjustable tension (I highly recommend Shubb's for this) and mimic the amount of tension your barre finger would normally. An adjustable tension, matched radius capo will also extend fret life.

Confirmed:
Fingerboard: Maple, 12” Radius (305 mm)
Frets: 21 6105 Narrow Jumbo Frets
Scale Length: 25.5” (648 mm)
Nut: 1.6875” (43 mm)

Will do.. appreciate it. I do think that notes are sharp period tho. My D chord bothers me it's so sharp; maybe get heavier gauge strings too? Should I bring it to someone to have intonation checked like others have mentioned?

Do as you wish if you think I'm wrong. Take it to someone.

I don't think you're wrong; I do appreciate it and I'll get one of those capos.. But I'm sharp even when not using a capo; any fretted notes on high strings; i guess I'm pretty sensitive to pitch too.

Then getting it intonated by someone is probably a good idea.

I ordered a new set of power and preamp tubes from Dougs Tubes. Hopefully that solves the problem.

If not I got no idea but I almost threw my tele out of the window because of how bad it sounds right now.

Update: Replaced the pre-amp and power tubes and there is still a hum going on. It’s not noticeable at low volumes but when I turn the master up over 75% it’s loud and bleeds through.

I thought it might be a ground loop issue but that doesn’t seem to be it. FretShack, any other ideas? I tried different outlets in my house and it’s still there.

How was your tone when you use to play? I bought a used egnater rebel from a local guitarist from a cover band about 2-3 years ago. I’ve yet to find a good tone I like. Now since I’m starting to get into pedals I’m lost even more.

I bought it for my first tube amp because it was at a good price. So it might not be exactly the style I like, but I can’t find a good tone with it.

This was my first tube. I am kind of "meh" on it, but I don't feel like trying to sell this one and with a baby on the way I don't feel like dropping another $600 for a new amp.

It was great for what we were doing when I bought it (late 70ish rock music), but now trying to do more range of music its kind of muddy. Egnater amps seem kind of strange on how they suggest you EQ everything. A lot of it is master volume over 3:00, gain around 8:00, bump the bass, scoop mids and have treble around 3:00. Here are their preset suggestions that may help. LINK

There seem to be a huge range of opinions on the Egnater amps. I like to run my amp settings on the more clean style and use my ODs to dirty it up. I also have an Xotic EP booster that I love. It helps saturate a lot of the tones that the amp seems to lack.

Some days I like my amp, some days I hate it. I find it super bass heavy. But great for a starter to see what I like and don’t like.

He built in reverb also went out if anyone had any ideas on trying to change that out.

I almost found that increasing the bass EQ made it more "clear" and less boomy, if that makes any sense.

I am playing around with my pedal board and put an MXR Super Comp on it and it helped tighten everything up.

Is it a tube amp or digital? Never mind...it’s probably a tube.
