There is a coffee house on Jefferson called Brew Ha Ha that has an open mic night. It tends to be more acoustic guitar, singer/songwriter acts from what I've seen.

I think Phil Brady's still does blues jam nights, as well.

Used to be one at the Mellow Mushroom by campus many moons ago. No clue if they still do it.

French quarter daiquiris and mellow used to have one. One was like Tuesday nights and the other Wednesdays I think. Idk if they're still doing it though

Schlitz and Giggles on Perkins does it one night a week...Wednesdays maybe?
Its usually just one guy with an acoustic guitar the whole time...occasionally another person will show up and they alternate

I really do wish that the people would make more of an effort to encourage young wannabe musicians to actually do something.
They've become a lot better recently in backing their local talent but if its still anything like it was when I was there it is hard as hell for an outsider to work his way into that musician "scene".
And if its still like that then its a damn shame. As big of a school and as many demographics that the student body encompasses there is a distinct possibly that there is a great new scene that is lying just under the surface. A scene that is untapped and fresh but unavailable because of the barrier that is inexplicably placed between the normal populace and the musicians.
