Chris on North is in the heart of such a rough area, and dangerous area at night. I grew up going there underage in the early mid 1980s, drinking fishbowls, shooting pool, but would be leery today..wrong side of Fla and at night..nah!

What about the seemingly listless Spanish Moon? It hasn't had much cash sprinkled on it in ages? Would the owner be interested in selling? I've always loved that dive's bones, and it had a great run in the early 1990s. It too on the edges of some rough hood, but seemingly safer, and with BRPD compound around the corner, and another one just up Highland. Better lit and with some wide open clearings around..possibly easier for security and/or extra duty officers to manage?

Spanish Moon has the VoTech's enormous parking lot, and there is plenty of adjacent land that is overgrown, that could maybe be paved, lighting installed, fenced in, and possibly utilized if bought or leased?

I don't doubt that. It just seems like their facility and calendar, could be elevated to a higher stratosphere? At the turn of 1990, it had a run as the "it" place to be for music, right before Varsity took off like a rocket.

Actually, they don't. That isn't their property.

You haven't been there in some time have you? That's all been done. For like.. 8 years?

I was going to say that the average Baton Rouge concert go-er would shite their pants at the thought of attending such an 'urban' event.

Just one reason why Beatnik is better than Mud&Water.

And it ain't even close.

All I see around the exterior is mostly busted concrete, bent chain link, and a faded paint job from ages ago, witha few newer repaved sections. I drive past it frequently. Great dive bar bones, but it's looked exactly the same for ages.

No, I haven't been in a while, has the inside had work done? I'm gonna make a point to catch a show soon.

SM wouldn't lose any of it's dive bar aesthetics at all, even if beefed up greatly with new gentrification, imho it's facade and curb appeal could be greatly enhanced ..it's that pretty a box of brick.

They used to have stuff like that at the Office downtown.

M+W's lineup was phenomenal. I look forward to checking out the Beatnik though.

Mac deMarco would have been huge for M&W. That dude is blowing up big time right now.

The best show I saw there was probably Bernie Worrell Orchestra. It's a shame it was a Wednesday during finals week. There was nowhere near as many people there as there should've been

I've only booked one show at the nik so far and that was Robert Ellis - it will be a diverse venue for sure

The moon is doing just fine btw and I'm not one to ride some one else's vibe even if it were for sale. I prefer putting a fresh stamp on things

I hear you JW, and really liked you bringing s fresh venue to BR, really cute yard too.

Hopefully you will find/develop another winning location/facility to compliment your great scheduling..BR could really use it.

Agree %100

I've honestly always thought that the spanish moon was a horrible layout for a venue.

Good bar? yes. Always a fun bar

But definitely an awkward venue

The moons setup is terrible with that huge brick wall. Wish they would get some kind of sound dampening material to cover it up.

Bump….Just heard the people that own Huey's downtown bought the space. Supposedly want to keep it as a music venue.
