Look into modeling amps. Spark Amp is a small bedroom amp and Fender Mustang series amps are available.

There are others. I just know nothing about them. Both Spark and Fender have a tone cloud type setup with blue tooth and apps so you can pull literally thousands of different tones. Wanna sound like David Gilmour? These both have a reasonable facsimile. Is it going to sound exactly like Gilmours rig? Nope. But you, like me, SUCK when compared to him.

Many will hate on these amps, but they keep a beginner from drowning in pedals and cables and switches.

Buy the NEW line of Mustangs. The old ones have dropped their old software support and operating system.

You can probably buy a small amp at a pawnshop

I've thought about this, and haven't ruled it out, but I have a hard time supporting pawn shops. I have had so many nice tools stolen and probably pawned over the years that I'm a little sour on the places.

Interesting. Didn't know about these things. I'm intrigued.

I guess this is a potential issue going forward with this sort of product?

I bought new a black star 3W amp for $60b when I started learning and it was awesome for a little battery powered amp. I ended up playing more and bought a boss katana 50W. I’m happy with both.

Pawn shops try really hard not to buy stolen stuff. Stolen stuff usually goes to a drug dealer. I use to own a pawn shop, if somebody brought tools in, and you don't know anything about the guy, you start asking him questions, you will know pretty fast if they were really his tools. Same goes for guitars and guns. The cops keep a check with the pawnshops about this stuff, and they usually work together. Everybody hates thieves.

It's not really much of an issue, the still have the factory presets that will always work. You just won't be able to get those custom sounds of different players. I've had a Fender Mustang amp for years, and have never felt the need to download a single thing to it. It mimics other popular amps and has basic effects.

He’s right. It’s not a BIG deal. They are dirt cheap now because of the loss of software. So it’s case by case. If you get a good one that nobody made many changes to you’re fine. But if the previous owner loved Metal only and downloaded every possible metal preset into the amp and you aren’t a metal fan, you’ll have to do a lot of research online to find patches to change the presets. And the software to change the settings.

I did it. I have a Spark and a Mustang 3.

I have a million tones at my fingertips. And all I love are cleans and blues. And clean blues. Lol

What kind of Squier do you have? Telly or strat type?

A quick Google says strat type. It's what I imagine a 14 year old starts off with (not knocking it as I am at a 14 year old starter level).

My son has one. His interest waned. It is now my HSS Strat. Very light guitar. I am now always in the market for a drop in loaded pick guard.

It does the job I need it to do. Nothing fancy, but I'm years away from needing anything fancy. I also have a little 1/2 size acoustic, which is actually what inspired me to learn. Santa brought it to me when I was 8 or 9, but I never took to it. Fast forward almost 30 years, and now my two year old son has that acoustic hanging in his room and he is obsessed with it. I figured I'd learn to play so I can play him something.

I watched a few video on the amps you talked about. That Spark amp and associated app looks pretty cool. I think I'll wait until March for my birthday to buy myself one. That'll give me enough time to see if I really want to try and stick with learning.

Those are selling really well. One of our posters here ordered one, and I think it took him a few weeks to actually get his amp.

They’ve speed up. Guess their supplier finally caught up. I ordered one in August and got it in Sept.

Order through Amazon. They are an official seller with Amazon so you have recourse through Amazon if there is a problem. Mine arrived in a normal amount of time.

It MAY come with an ungrounded power cord. Mine did and it is a pain in the arse. It causes a hum on some presets. They range from barely noticeable to “oh my god turn that crap off.”

Google it. It is a known issue with the amp. And Amazon of course sells a compatible grounded power cord.

That was me. I ordered mine in February. Got it in October.

Its helping me learn so it was worth the $250 I spent on it. I need to be playing more but my time is short right now

Yeah, I knew it was you. Hope things are going good. Get back at that guitar as soon as you can. I have more time than ever to play these days, and it is really paying off. Wish that I could have had this much time 40 years ago.

I have somehow reversed that. I am working more right now than I ever have and I am too old for it. I am working myself to death.

I have been spending what little extra time at night I have with my headphones on. Been really hooked on the new Tool album for some reason. I really never listened to them until the past few years.

Will pick my fiddle back up soon. Just had a rough time lately..

Can anyone recommend some techniques or exercises for getting better at barre chords? I'm ok at them, but would like to improve, especially when I need to stretch my fingers (other than my index) like for a simple B chord.
