Legit criticism is a real thing, I get it, I'm not in love with Nickelback by any means.

I'm just saying it became a hip cultural thing amongst people who've never written or played a note of music in their life to shite all over them for no good reason.

They were Canadian Hootie and the Blowfish...

They weren't terrible and Chad Kroeger is a legit good dude.

Some of my favorite bands are Steely Dan, Tears For Fears, The Police, and Khruangbin.

As I've gotten older, I really like Bossa Nova and Brazilian artists like Tom Jobim, Joao Gilberto, Elis Regina, Baden Powell, Walter Wanderley, etc. It's unreal how many great musicians have came from Brazil.

I think people that care about meaningful music shite on them because of all of the above reasons I mentioned.

But your definition of "meaningful" and mine are probably totally different.

Which is why a lot of people, like myself, hate their music. Hootie and the Blowfish were one of those bands that signaled that good music in the 90s was dead and a lot of shitty bands(like Nickelback and Hootie) were about to blow up.

Some people like fish tacos, I think they are repellent.

Some people love the Foo-Fighters, I think they are overrated.

At the end of the day your favorite music has a lot to do with what you were doing at the time.

It really is as cliche as it sounds "the soundtrack to your life".

I get it.

But at the end of the day, that didn't stop you from buying your favorite bands new album.

quote:

[Verse 1]
I like your pants around your feet
And I like the dirt that's on your knees
And I like the way you still say please
While you're looking up at me
You're like my favourite damn disease

[Verse 2]
And I love the places that we go
And I love the people that you know
And I love the way you can't say no
Too many long lines in a row
I love the powder on your nose

[Chorus]
And now I know who you are
It wasn't that hard, just to figure you out
(Now I did, you wonder why)
And now I know who you are
It wasn't that hard, just to figure you out
(Now I did, you wonder why)

[Verse 3]
I like the freckles on your chest
And I like the way you like me best
And I like the way you're not impressed
While you put me to the test
I like the white stains on your dress

[Verse 4]
And I love the way you pass the check
And I love the good times that you wreck
And I love your lack of self-respect
While you're passed out on the deck
I love my hands around your neck

[Chorus]
And now I know who you are
It wasn't that hard, just to figure you out
(Now I did, you wonder why)
And now I know who you are
It wasn't that hard, just to figure you out
(Now I did, you wonder why)
(Why not before? You never tried)
(Gone for good, and this is it)

Well if this is their new release, I don't think they started very high, but this seems pretty far downhill.

I'm no Nickelback fan, don't know what your point is.

This tribalistic bullshite of "my band is better than yours" is stupid and counter productive.

My 3 favorite bands are The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Queensryche, so I guess I "win" if we're talking about "meaningful music

I see it that way too, which is why I don't want a lot of crappy music on the soundtrack.

But it's more than nostalgia. I was 20 in 1990 and it would seem like 90s music would be the music that I identify the most with. But I'd much rather listen to music from the 70s or 80s than pretty much anything from the 90s.

This times one million.

The great thing about the Internet is having the ability to revisit some incredible performances.

I always loved the band Chicago but never realized what a badass Terry Kath was until I watched some of their old live performances.

Nope. It just made me realize that it was time to just put the radio station in my car on talk radio and give up on the music stations. I was already "You young people and your crappy music" by 26 or so, thanks to Nu Metal and bands like Hootie and Nickelback.

Steely Dan, TFF and The Police all hit my workshop player in recent weeks too, DG. Some of the cover bands I've played guitar in over the years have covered Tears and Police songs (I'm 54). Never covered SD, I'd have to woodshed harder and be surrounded by some serious talent to even consider it. Same goes for bossa nova and samba and tango and the like - seriously talented musicians in those genres. I don't own any New Kids or Limp Biskit. Or Nickleback.

San Quentin

these lyrics are the equivalent of bro country

quote:

"San Quentin"

Let's get this circus on down the road
We're taking bets how far a tank of gas will go
Call up your best friend, then call two more
About to do some shite that you ain't seen before
There ain't no backdoor, there ain't no sign
Location changes almost every other night
Last time we found it, can't remember much
I thought I was a God until my lawyer woke me up and said I

Testify that I was right out of my mind
Let the record show I did it all for rock and roll
Screamin' every night, playing 25 to Life
So somebody please keep me the hell out of San Quentin
Out of San Quentin
Just keep me out of San Quentin
Ooh, can somebody please keep me the hell out of San Quentin?

Got out on bail, we hit the town
Somebody told me we should burn it to the ground
Too many favors, too much to drink
Come 6 AM, they had me back inside the clink

I'm gonna testify that I was right out of my mind
Let the record show I did it all for rock and roll
Screamin' every night, playing 25 to Life
So can somebody please keep me the hell out of San Quentin?
Out of San Quentin
Oh, just keep me out of San Quentin
Ooh, can somebody please keep me the hell out of San Quentin?

Tough to find, a goddamn alibi
Wrong or right, it's tough to justify
Can't dismiss, too many witnesses
When insanity's the pattern, it don't matter what it is

I'm gonna testify that I was right out of my mind
Let the record show I did it all for rock and roll
Screamin' every night, playing 25 to Life
So somebody please keep me the hell out of San Quentin
Out of San Quentin
Oh, just keep me out of San Quentin
Ooh, can somebody please keep me the hell out of San Quentin?

People take this shite waaaaay to seriously.

At the end of the day, it's entertainment, period.

It isn't "art", it's music.

If I feel like listening to BJ Thomas, it's because I'm in the mood for BJ Thomas.

If I'm in the mood for Cradle of Filth, it's perhaps because I'm feeling a little worked up.

If a bands' mere existence and desire to entertain and make money affect your life, you've got bigger problems than your favorite bands song can ever fix.

Nickelback was to rock what Florida Georgia line was to county.

I don’t mind listening to a few songs of either not that I think they great or anything.
