Any of you guys ever heard of a cat named Billy Preston?

Guitar - Jeff Beck

He can play pretty much anyone's music and style, but they can't copy his style. Just ask Clapton.

Going to be a non-traditional choice, but Beck is a GOAT candidate. Also one of those underrated 6-string players over the years. Is able to play the slower tempo, bluesy stuff, as well as the more challenging, tempo-wise, rock stuff - and do it in a unique style.

Another guy that often gets overlooked (because of the band's relatively low regard among snobs and critics) is Don Felder. He didn't try to branch out and play bass or keyboards, but was competent on mandolin and banjo - and a blistering lead, rhythm, slide and steel guitar player - and could play everything from country/bluegrass, bluesy rock stuff, mainstream rock, even harder edged stuff and also has a fairly unique signature on the instrument.

Nice choice but Piazzolla played bandoneon, not accordian.

Neither hold a candle to Jimmy Mcgriff, Jimmy Smith, Brother Jack Mcduff, or Dr. Lonnie Smith. Especially not Greg Allman.

Maybe. Preston had the combination of skill on the instrument AND making it fit into the music, plus he has the advantage of being one of a handful of legitimate "5th Beatle" credentials - to the point that, if the Beatles had continued past Abbey Road, he would have been invited to join. So, his playing on so many popular songs does help his reputation.

Jimmy Smith is probably the right answer here, for the Hammond Organ though.

Yep I apologize for that, got some faulty info. I've been believing he's dead for about two years now. Glad to hear he's still alive, the GOAT harmonica player.

I don't know about "GOAT," but here are some folks I associate with a particular musical instrument:

Guitar - Jimmy Page
Bass - John Entwistle
Drums - Ringo Starr
Piano - Elton John
Saxophone - Clarence Clemmons
Trumpet - Al Hirt
Accordion - Clifton Chenier
Flute - Ian Anderson
Xylophone - Lionel Hampton
Fiddle - Charlie Daniels
Cow Bell - Will Farrell...

Is John Popper one of the few unanimous GOATs of an instrument? It seems like no one is close to him, as far as I know.
