This. There is a good number of regulars in this thread that need to grasp this.

Using songwriting in a jam band discussion is funny.

Songwriting isn't important? It is to some people.

If there is any area where I think Phish is lacking, it is in the songwriting. Their vocal melodies aren't very memorable. The lyrics are generally goofy and uninspired. This is why I think the Dead is a better overall jam band, even though I find Phish to be better at actual "jamming."

I never knew there was this jam band fan base rivalry, until I found this place.

I would certainly say that Phish ventures out further with their jams than the Dead.

Futher to the sea because of treys whale calls maybe.

Phish comes nowhere near the territory of stretching out like the dead.

stretching out

Is this supposed to be the definition of good jamming??

Sorry, not a fan of 20 minute whack-off sessions that go nowhere.

The Dead's jams were more melodic and centered around the songs.

But you like phish? Thats the definition of a phish jam, not the dead.

If thats what you mean by stretching out, i agree. Phish leaves behind the song structure more frequently.

The dead were better at segues but most of those were basically built into the jam structure.

Their jams are long-winded at times, but usually are built the way I like. Something about how they create and relieve tension all while building in intensity.

Wine
Sake
Rumplemintz
Fireballs

Do not mix!

I still stand by most of the things I posted, however.

Phish > Dead

And I love The Dead, but Phish has just done more memorable jams for me. Maybe it is simply a product of my age (I was six when Jerry died) - I dunno.

That's what it is Heady. Being at the show is what makes the impact.

I saw my first show in 93 at giants stadium. Obviously, the band was on a steep decline at this point because of jerrys addiction, but i had a religious experience.

Ill never forget it, i had been smoking some weed at the show, but nothing serious. During the 2nd set, they played bertha, and i looked around and could feel all 80k people grooving, it was like the heavens opened and shined a light down on me. It was literally like in the blues brothers when they are at james browns church and elwood starts screaming 'i see the light!'

That day changed my life forever.
