I know next to nothing about guitars but this seems like a musician version of the old joke about the guy going to the doctor and saying "Doc it hurts when I do this" and the doctor replies "don't do that."

My advice would be to try to play with a softer touch. Constantly trying to remind myself of this.

Also, some picks are better than others about tearing up guitars. I find dunlops are better than fenders in this regard.

I was also worried that maybe I'm not strumming correctly and could improve my technique. I do have trouble being able to pick the strings I want to pick sometimes. I just hit the wrong string.

Maybe I"m just overthinking all of this.

Probably not thinking enough. Seriously, challenge yourself to know exactly which string you are going to hit, or more precisely which note you are trying to hit. There is some overcompensating going on in your attack because of not being deliberate enough in your note choice.

I am describing my own problems. the first few years I played I beat up my guitars pretty bad. I have a tele that I haven’t played in 15 years that is beat to hell and has red scratches from these red picks I used to have. Over time I’ve tried to correct my sloppy playing, the only thing I have found that works is getting better at knowing what I should be playing (that is, I’m playing these two notes which is the first and third notes in the scale), a more precise attack has come with that.

Regardless of the pick you are using, choke up on it so that not so much of the tip is sticking out and CAN'T drag the soundboard, regardless of your technique.

Insteada like this ...

Choke up more ...

These are images I found online for reference. I choke up even more, I barely have any pick tip hanging out even when I'm strumming.

Fender

You know..it's probably been more than 7 years since I've even held a strat.

Maybe I should look into finding one that I'm comfortable with.
