Music Room/Gear Questions

So it looks as though I will be freeing up one of our rooms in our home, and I'd like to make it a music room. I diddle the bass a little bit (very little bit), but would like to add an acoustic guitar, pa system, and drum kit to all mess around with and for when fellow music playing buddies are over and what-not. My question is, what would be a nice starter acoustic guitar (under $400) and drum kit (under $1000 including hardware)?

You can find a Gretsch Catalina for ~$500 if you look around. Throw in a cymbal pack and you're good to go. Catalina is a great kit and you can do a few little upgrades over time to REALLY make it nice.

You could go with that, but getting a $500-600 kit and a decent cymbal pack would be 10x better. The Energy kit is ok, but mine (old model...blackhawks) had issues after a while. The hardware (lugs and shite) isn't durable at all and lugs ain't cheap to replace. Cymbal stands and throne were good. Hat pedal kinda sucked. Kick pedal wasn't horrible but wasn't anything special either.
My Catalinas came with all the mounting hardware but no stands, cymbals, or thrones. Get some stands off ebay or craigslist. Unless you're dying for new cymbals, buy them off of ebay/craigslist too. Just as good and you'll save a FORTUNE. Between my hats, ride, and one of my crashes, I ended up saving close to $500 by going used. You could tell the ride was used but the hats and crash were basically brand new.

I have the 7-piece maple version of that kit. Really solid kit, even for intermediate players. I've done some stuff on mine to upgrade them but even before then I was extremely pleased.

They're a REALLY nice drum kit. Best value out there IMO. I've replaced my hoops with s-hoops and refinished the inside of the shells with teak oil. Look/sound amazing. I've had them for 2 years and I couldn't be happier.

Alvarez has some solid cheaper acoustics. I have one as my camping/party guitar.

I bought an Epiphone for my daughter a few years back when she said she wanted to play, and for a few hundred bucks, that guitar sounded great.

for drums, I'd just get a $500 electric kit. you can change the sounds of each drum/cymbal, use it with headphones or speakers, don't have to worry with tuning the drums, etc.

Visit craigslist and local pawnshops and/or ebay for used Yamaha and Sigma (Martin subsidiary) guitars. In my experience they are by far the best cheap acoustics you can buy.

They don't.
Tuning and caring for drums CAN be a pain in the arse but once you get the hang of it there is nothing to it.
