After two listens I'm underwhelmed. It's not a bad album, but I feel like its basically Sigh No More, only more energetic. Listening to this album I feel like I've heard it before. They don't push boundaries, or explore any new territory. In fact most of the record sounds like they would be filler tracks on Sigh No More. They played it safe.
Honestly the whole feels like Nashville mega-church worship music.

I wouldn't expect them to. Hell, I wouldn't expect any band to coming off the success of its predecessor. Same thing with Fleet Foxes. Although Helplessness Blues was a fantastic effort, to me, it still felt like just more of the same.
It's hard when you already know what to expect. That's why sophomore albums rarely ever meet the expectations set by amazing debuts.

I actually like this one better than "Sigh No More". More energetic, exactly what I wanted it to be.

There is a huge danger of never expanding your style (and there is also a risk of expanding so far that it sucks...see Muse), but I don't mind it at all if a band decides to fine-tune the style of their previous album.

It's tough, really tough, to make a sophomore album that meets expectations set by the debut. But for me, what makes a great second release is when a band can improve on their sound, while sticking to what made them popular.
In an earlier post I mentioned Fleet Foxes as a band whose second album wasn't as good as their first. But this is purely my opinion. I probably enjoyed their first album more simply due to personal reasons. However, to illustrate my point on improving their sound, consider what made them popular in the first place. It was folksy, woodsy, with incredible harmonizing vocals. In their next release, Helplessness Blues, they maintained all that, yet added additional instrumentation, and there was a subtle hint of psychedelic influences. Basically they at least tried to do something different and not release a B-sides album.
This is one example of a band who improved upon their sound without "selling out". In M&S's case, they took the safer route and released a second album that, to a lot of people, sounds the exact same as their first.

nor do I. especially with a band as young as mumford. plus, their kind of music is something that you rarely, if ever, hear. that's what makes it so awesome, to me. so i don't mind repetitiveness because I don't hear it otherwise.
