What are some of the most powerful lyrics that you can think of? I'm gonna go with

A Perfect Circle - Judith

Background: MJK's mother is Judith... She ended up having an aneurism and was left paralyzed. Before hand she was VERY religious and remained so even after her incident. Maynard is questioning her. I think the rest is self explanatory.

Followup: Maynard completely changes his feelings for Tool's 10k Days album which is very religion focused and "10K days" is the amount of time that his mother was paralyzed before she passed.

quote:

You're such an inspiration for the ways
That I'll never ever choose to be
Oh so many ways for me to show you
How the savior has abandoned you
frick your God
Your Lord and your Christ
He did this
Took all you had and
Left you this way
Still you pray, you never stray
Never taste of the fruit
You never thought to question why

It's not like you killed someone
It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side
Praise the one who left you
Broken down and paralyzed
He did it all for you
He did it all for you

Oh so many many ways for me to show you
How your dogma has abandoned you
Pray to your Christ, to your god
Never taste of the fruit
Never stray, never break
Never---choke on a lie
Even though he's the one who did this to you
You never thought to question why

Not like you killed someone
It's Not like you drove a spiteful spear into his side
Talk to Jesus Christ
As if he knows the reasons why
He did it all for you
Did it all for you
He did it all for you..

If I get to include the background story as you did, then I have to go with Clapton's "Tears in Heaven". Not sure how you can top a song about your 3 yr old son falling 40+ floors to his death out of a window.

So while you sit and whistle, 'Dixie' With your money and your power
I can hear the flowers growin' In the rubble of the towers
I hear leaders quit their lyin'
I hear babies quit their cryin'
I hear soldiers quit their dyin' One and all
I hear them all I hear them all I hear them all

You nailed it.
Pretty awesome of MJK to write about something so personal, which is what gives it the power

Ryan Adams - La Cienega Just Smiled

quote:

One breaks my body and the other breaks my soul La Cienega just smiles as it waves goodbye

quote:

La Cienega just smiles as it waves goodbye
And I hold you close in the back of my mind Feels so good but damn it makes me hurt And I'm too scared to know how I feel about you now How I feel about you now La Cienega just smiles and says, "I'll see you around"

Sufjan Stevens, "Romulus."

Once when our mother called,
She had a voice of last year's cough.
We passed around the phone,
Sharing a word about Oregon.

When my turn came, I was ashamed.

Once when we moved away,
She came to Romulus for a day.
Her Chevrolet broke down.
We prayed it'd never be fixed or found.
We touched her hair, we touched her hair.

When she had her last child, Once when she had some boyfriends, some wild.
She moved away quite far.
Our grandpa bought us a new VCR.
We watched it all night, but grew up in spite of it.

We saw her once last fall.
Our grandpa died in a hospital gown.
She didn't seem to care.
She smoked in her room and colored her hair.

I was ashamed, I was ashamed of her.

I am a total Pearl Jam homer BUT. Backspacer album had Just Breathe and The End on it.

I have only recently listened to The End and gotten into it. Now I play it all the time.

"I just want to grow old.... I just want to grow old..." Simple but awesome lyric. Have a buddy whose wife died to breast cancer very young and left him with 2 kids. Song always makes me think of his situation. Even though he has moved on.

There are so many others that are now cliche'.

Every word from Imagine for instance.

I thought he wrote the song prior to the accident and used to sing it to his son at night? He just refined it and released it as a memorial to his son.

nevermind I did a search He wrote it after.
