I would think that there are hymns that have been played/sung more often and to more listeners than Greensleeves. Gregorian Chants originated in the 9th and 10th centuries and have been part of the Catholic liturgy for over a millennium.

I've sang that song as long as I can remember, but I'd guess most every city slicker has never heard it

I've never heard anybody outside of the west sing "Greensleeves." "Happy Birthday", on the other hand, is everywhere.
