Modest Mouse for beginners (comprehensive listening guide)

I didn't really get into Modest Mouse until well into my college years with Good News.., and later with We Were Dead...
So I've decided to go back to the beginning, and listen to what Modest Mouse enthusiasts claim to be their best work. So I'm starting with This Is a Long Drive... and hitting the full length LPs along the way. Is it absolutely necessary to listen to all of the EPs, and compilations? I don't want to miss anything great, but the time I have to listen to music is not infinite.
So I've decided to go back to the beginning, and listen to what Modest Mouse enthusiasts claim to be their best work. I think Moon and Antartica is their most accessible and a good place to start. great band.

The EP's you should listen to are Building Nothing Out of Something, The Fruit That Ate Itself, Everywhere and His Nasty Parlour Tricks, No One's First and You're Next, and Sad Sappy Sucker.
SSS, at first listen, sounds to be garbage, but there are some gems on there including: Dukes Up, Classy Plastic Lumber, and Mice Eat Cheese. There are definitely hints of Isaac's mad genius on that record.

Damn, I wish I could go back and listen to Lonesome Crowded West and Moon & Antartica again for the first time.
Modest Mouse is probably my favorite band ever and I don't even have all the EPs/compilations so I wouldn't say it was neccessary, but it couldn't hurt. And yeah, definitely check out Building Nothing Out of Something.

I'm with Seaward. I'm a bit jealous as well.
Their EP's are ally really good. Building Nothing Out of Something is a b-sides compilation, and it is VERY good. I think We Were Dead is my least favorite of all the EP's and LP's, though I still think it's a decent record.
Sad Sappy Sucker is very different. Lots of raw takes, but it is an interesting listen.

I've listened to most of the songs from these albums before, but I've never actually delved into them. In general I don't like to remove tracks from the context of their respective albums, so I hope my experience with these will be fresh and feel new to me.

If this is what Rock has become and will remain, it's no wonder people listen to fukin eagle 98.1 every day and all 20 songs they play in 4 hours along with "License to Win" every 30 minutes.
Modest Mouse is not bad, but where is the heavy crunchy guitar sound in today's bands? That garage sound? I miss it.

Have you listened to Lonesome Crowded West? If not, you should. Like right now.
I don't really listen to 98.1, but I would guess that it rocks more than the majority of stuff they play.

I don't know how important lyrics are to you, but that's Modest Mouse's bread and butter. Let's face it, he's not a very good singer, and not THAT great of a musician. But he's got a hell of a way of putting things. The whole record (lonesome crowded west) is about suburban sprawl, and how mini-malls are ruining the charm of small towns.

The Pitchfork Classic link you posted a few days is what started this whole thing for me. I watched it last night, and realized that I probably need to listen to all this stuff. It's a shame that I haven't yet!
