Modern Day 4-track?

I wish I still had my old tascam. What's the modern version I can use on a PC? 1/4 inputs with a click track, very basic shite. Thanks in advance.

Tascam Dp-0008-EX
Much better once you learn to use it.
About $ 250.00 at AMS, has 8 digital tracks, lots of decent effects and you can use it anywhere.
Interfaces directly to your PC with an included USB cable.
I recommend upgrading the SD card to the max before you ever use it.

Interesting, how do I export the digital files from the card to my computer?

You would have to use the recorder in mix down/mastering mode.
You can't really just take the SD card and put it into your computer. It wouldn't be formatted correctly.
Remember how you had to use your 4 track and mix down to a regular cassette recorder, via receiver, EQ? It's kind of the same thing.
A really good computer, with a good interface and recording program is better, but not nearly as portable, and definitely much more expensive.
The Tascam 0008 is more for building songs. It's really simple to use for that.

What are you trying to record?
Unless it's an acoustic guitar or acoustic drums, most everything else is wired direct or mic'ed through a digital interface and then into a digital audio workstation on your computer.

I don't see any kind of interface from the unit to connect to a computer (usb, etc) other than typical outputs like RCA. In my old tape tascam, you could mix down as you said, and then walk away with a tape. What's the walk away with this unit?

1/4 inch DI out of a Roland Cube, guitar and bass parts. Maybe XLR vocals, maybe. No drums for this purpose, but a click track would be fantastic.

I like it better than working on the computer or GarageBand iOS for just recording ideas

This should be what you need:
Scarlet Focusrite
Pyle Mini Hum Eliminator
Mixcraft DAW
The Mixcraft DAW is your mixer/4 track. You can use Mixcraft for free until you're ready to start exporting tracks. There are also plenty of free versions of DAWs online (Reaper, etc.). I just happen to like Mixcraft because it's simple and intuitive yet powerful. You can create a clicktrack in the DAW.
I'm assuming you already have you own mic. If not, I use a Pyle Pro58 cheapie for decent effect.

Yeah the Tascam can do all that. I saw one used in Metairie for $100, got mine off reverb for $135.
Battery powered but 5V barrel adapter

I still have my TASCAM and don't know what to do with it.

In the link I gave you, you should be able to see the USB connection on the right end view, beside the SD card slot.
You hook directly to your computer's USB with the cable that's included with the unit.
Get your mix like you want it and play it to your computer.

There is also an audio out so the unit itself can play what you have recorded. It’s got the ability to store separate songs. It’s a little clunky for all of that, but it is possible for it to be an all in one solution that you only have to export the final product.
The card itself can be used in the same way as the usb for transferring from the videos I have seen.
I’d love to learn this thing better than I do now.

There are lots of really solid USB interfaces. I'm just a guy with a couple of guitars, so I only need one or two inputs at a time. Currently eyeballing the PreSonus Studio 26c 2x4. Their interfaces also come with pretty solid studio software.
PreSonus is also born and raised in Baton Rouge.

Right, I just plug powered computer speakers into mine to get a decent mix before I export it to the computer.

The first 1 I bought was used and didn't have an instruction manual.
I bought a new one last year, so it had a manual, I'm learning it better now, but I know it's capable of more than what I'm doing so far.

Mine was used so I didn’t get a manual.
But luckily This guy on YouTube does a walkthrough of very function.
He did a great job of this, very instructional rather than demonstration.
