You, sir, said exactly what I was going to say.

Also, the arrangements started to become oversimplified when juxtaposed with the previous record, ...And Justice For All. How you go from what is viewed by many metal fans as the definitive progressive thrash album to that record is beyond me.
Even though AJFA is my favorite record of theirs, I think it's more accurate to say that they crammed just a bit too much stuff into the arrangements of those songs.
To me, it was only natural for them to make a simpler album. They took things as far as they could go up to that point.
And if I had a nickel for every time somebody complains about the sound of AJFA...
The self-titled album is a joy to listen to when you put it next to...St. Anger, that's for sure!

It's a good album but nothing like what came before it.

Great album and was the album that got my into metal.
It is definitely a different sound than their other albums, but to me it is still one of the best albums I've ever heard.
Ride the Lightning is my favorite Metallica album. I first heard it because I went to the Mall with the intent to buy the Black album. They were sold out but had Ride the Lightning so I picked it up. Fell in love with the album. Stopped listening to rap and became a big metal fan.
