Heard a new song on the radio, All Within My Hands, the other day and see that Metallica is doing another album with the San Francisco Symphony.

Youtube preview

While I'm incredibly stoked about it, because the first one was awesome, it also looks and sounds a lot like the first one. I hope like hell they do a lot more songs that were not covered in the first album. Also, looking forward to more original songs because No Leaf Clover was badass and I really liked Human.

And I know that All Within My Hands isn't a new song, but the symphony version was new to me. I also refuse to acknowledge the St Anger album because it was awful. This was better.

They recorded these shows last year. I listened to bootlegs right after the shows happened. Sounded like crap but when I say bootleg I mean cell phone camera so maybe that's why they sucked. It was basically the same setlist both nights. They opened the Warriors' new arena in San Francisco. The first show was recorded in a big concert hall so the acoustics are probably worse on this one too.

How different can this really be from the original?

Looks too similar to the original. I was hyped until I watched all of the previews. Michael Kamen wrote the original S&M arrangements and he's been dead for a while now. So it makes sense that they just reused those same arrangments, but I'm disappointed they didn't find someone else to write the orchestra parts for a different setlist.

Sounds like they've done that before

Exactly my thoughts. They’ve got a big enough catalog to do a completely different set list but looks like more of the same with a few newer songs sprinkled in.

I've been a big Metallica fan since high school, but for the first time in over 25 years of following the band, I'll likely not buy this when it's released August 28th. Like many here have said, there's a definite sense of "been there, done that" when it comes to Metallica joining forces with a symphony orchestra. I've watched clips of the performance online and it seems a bit plodding. No disrespect intended to the guys, as we all get older. But I vividly recall James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich stating in a number of interviews during the "Load" era that when a band gets into the habit of playing it safe and repeating itself, that band is dead and done. Well...

I saw S&M 2 in the theater on one of its initial releases. S&M was my first foray into Metallica and metal in general so obviously I think extremely highly of it.

The quality was great, but I was very disappointed in the song selection as there were way too many repeats from the first S&M. Some new ones like Unforgiven 3 and Anesthesia on cello were great, but far too much overlap.

Oh and frick St. Anger that shite never happened.

Pretty sure my ears are still ringing from Lars’ snare.
