Looking to upgrade the pickups in my SG specifically for a more metal sound.

Toneally something along the lines of Metallica/ Tool/ Avenged Sevenfold (Particularly their tone on the album Hail to the King)

I’m also open to suggestions for Angus Young’s tone. It is a Black SG

I’m open to either active or passive.

Any suggestions?

I’m pretty sure everyone mentioned other than Metallica use variations of Seymour Duncan. Metallica uses EMG.

I launched The Coil Shack, my shop's hand-wound custom pickup shop, last year. Everything is wound by hand, to order, using the finest components and client input to create specifically what they seek. Varieties of humbuckers alone I've wound for clients and myself range from vintage and hot classic to modern metal genres. I stay backordered for pickups - in just the past two weeks, I sold three humbucker sets (one set to a TD'er), and a set each of my favorite recipes for Strat and for Jazz Bass.

If you are in or near BR, you are more than welcome to make an appointment and come see me at the workshop. My personal guitars double as pickup demos. We can also discuss OTC pickups - I'm an authorized dealer for or have distributor access to a lot of notable marquis brands, including Duncan and EMG. Google "The Fret Shack" or "The Coil Shack" and you'll find my contact information.

I’ll send you an email. I like the idea of custom pickups. Plus you can clean it and adjust
the tension bridge.

I like EMG 81s, in the neck and bridge. Thats what I have in my les pauls. Chrome EMG 81s. In my ESP 7 string I have EMG 85-7H (neck) and EMG 81-7H (bridge).

Also the Seymour Duncan AHB-1 Blackouts and Black Winter pickups are decent.

Was wondering if you also do pedal work/restoration? I have some old BOSS boxes back in Louisiana that need help lol

My Les Paul had an Alnico Pro II in the neck and a Pearly Gates in the Bridge.

I want a different tone in my SG.

An SG was the first guitar i really wanted. There was one at the guitar store, was like a dark candy apple red with a wood grain. 11 year old me would walk in and the floor guy would just hand me the polish towel for it.

Aside from the talent gap, I probably looked like Angus young. Same size and all.

I have SD P-Rails neck and SD Invader bridge picked out to replace SD Jazz neck and SD Duncan Distortion bridge in my Warmoth. The new combo gives me the best range - I’ll play Lamb of God followed by Ryan Bingham. Pretty sure SD website has audio files for their products, should help point you in the right direction.

Both the Alnico II Pro and the Pearly Gates are built around Alnico 2 magnets. I love the Alnico II Pro but I think the Pearly Gates is very overrated. It's honky and nasal for my tastes.

You likely want an A5 (bright with scooped mids) or a ceramic magnet (punch and authority with mid girth) as your blueprint. EMG 81, SD Blackouts and most other actives are ceramic mag. The Duncan Invader, Black Winter and all the single-coil sized humbuckers are passive ceramics.

My favorite OTC passive ceramic is Duncan Nazgul. A more punchy JB without the ice or the upper mid hump. Great pickup. Pair it with Duncan Sentient. My favorite OTC passive alnico is Duncan Custom 5, the 5 being the alnico alloy.

My favorite of my hand-wound humbuckers are actually built around Alnico 8. It's a rarer alloy with the punch and authority of ceramic with the musicality of alnico. Few manufacturers use A8 and I have no clue why. It is the best of both worlds.

My magnet arsenal for custom winds include ceramics, plus A2, A3, A4, A5, A8 and A9. I'll betcha didn't know that last one even existed. It is very aggressive.

Will we find pricing info anywhere? Just ballpark or specific. So I don’t call and embarrass myself or insult you with numbers I have in MY head.

You won't find Coil Shack pricing unless you call or e- me ... but my Coil Shack singles start at $100 each and my Coil Shack humbuckers start at $150 each.

Oh, Clint, I don't repair pedals, or amps (I get at least one call a week for that) ... only things with frets, hence the name :)

If I glue a fretboard to my broken wah will you fix it?

Not unless you want the wah's fingerboard refretted. Seriously, I serviced just under 900 guitars, basses, mandos, ukes, banjos and dulcimers last year. AND I added a custom pickups operation. I don't have time for any business pertaining to amps or stompboxs or violins or woodwinds or PAs or whatever else. Sorry.

I bought a Charvel San Dimas 2 with the Dimarzio Fortitude (bridge), Dimarzio PAF (neck). Sounds metal enough with my shitty headphone amp.

I play mostly metal, and out of all my guitars, my best sounding is a Jackson with Seymour Duncan Blackouts (Mick Thomson signature).
