possum isn't in my top 5, but he's in my top 10. difference of opinion, man.

No offense, but If George Jones is not even in your top 5 then you don't like Country music

Well they are not in my personal fav list, but as you saw they are in my all time greatest list.
Keith Whitley could have been one of the greatest, his life and career unfolded just like the country songs he sang. If you have never listened the album "Sad songs and waltzes" do it as soon as you can. It is a compilation of the songs he sang while in the JD Crowe Band. The harmonies are absolutely beautiful. My favorite songs off the album are "I never go around mirrors", "sad songs and waltzes", and "somewhere between". "I never go around mirrors" is a very uptempo version of the same song he released later on his album "Don't close your eyes".

Great thread as long as no one says Conway Twitty, Glen Campbell, or Kenny Rogers. First one who does gets RA'd.

No Ronnie Milsap either
Actually I like these guys too...they're not my favorites, but they do belong on the list.

I agree with this.
He did do a great cover of Mirrors. Have you ever heard the original version by Lefty Frizzell?

Of course. I was just telling you that he has two versions of the song. A faster waltz style and the slower version.

I acknowledge the Possum's greatness, he's just not one of my favorites. No love for Vern Gosdin and Gary Stewart?

It's very hard to pick a Top 10 for me, there are so many good ones. Some of mine, in no particular order:
George Jones
Johnny Cash
Merle Haggard
Hank Williams Sr.
Hank Williams Jr.
Vern Gosdin
Clint Black
Keith Whitley
The problem comes when you try to compare guys who have been around for decades with those who have only been around a decade or less. There simply isn't enough of a body of music to compare.

Damn how could I have forgotten about Vern Gosdin. Great catch. Gary Stewart is alright.
