I'm having an argument with a friend over this. I personally like LS better. I need opinions.

CCR: more songs, better songs. If he isn't already, John Fogerty should be in some lyricist hall of fame.

Yeah I saw him live at the orange bowl earlier this year. I'm not discounting them. It really does come down to opinion because they're both great. We're just trying to get a majority opinion one way or the other.

Skynyrd was a better band, but Fogerty was a better songwriter.

Still, they both made awesome music. Why choose one over the other?

While I think CCR is the better, more interesting band, I wouldn't slag Skynard. they're cool. But for that type of music I'd rather listen to the Allman Brothers.

Edge to CCR, but I agree with this.

To me it's CCR and it's not even close. I love a couple of lynard somgs, but there are tons of noteworthy CCR hits

Skynyrd also has a lot of bad songs. A lot of them. CCR doesn't have many.

Well I will give skynyrd an incomplete on a grade because of what happened, but I enjoy both. CCR doesn't have anything close to Freebird " live" though.

Because Americans love to fight. All real Americans love the sting and clash of battle. When you were kids, you all admired the champion marble shooter, the fastest runner, the big-league ball players and the toughest boxers. Americans love a winner and will not tolerate a loser. Americans play to win all the time. That's why Americans have never lost and will never lose a war. The very thought of losing is hateful to Americans.

Well bama fans have made one of LS's biggest hits virtually unlistenable to me.

Even throwing that out, I feel like CCR has the better catalogue

The Allman Brothers are not as akin to Lynyrd Skynyrd as you make it seem, and I would go as far as to say that CCR aren't exactly genre-linked to either band. The brand of Southern rock popularized by Lynyrd Skynyrd, which could be argued as the epitome of that particular genre, placed greater emphasis on country, hard rock, and blues rock elements.

The Allman Brothers incorporated so many elements, particularly instrumentals tinged with jazz, that it almost seems necessary to separate them from subsequent bands which emerged from the South.

Without question. Skynyrd's numbers alone make them a more formidable act.

Ed King, Steve Gaines, Gary Rossington, and Allen Collins were all phenomenal guitar players who had chops as good as anyone in Southern rock. Billy Powell is a classically-trained pianist who is just as responsible as anyone for making "Free Bird" into the anthem we know it to be.

Artimus Pyle was solid on the drum kit and Ronnie Van Zant's north Florida drawl made those songs identifiable with blue collar, working class America. His voice isn't necessarily powerful and his range doesn't stand out by any means, but dammit I'm not sure anyone else can deliver those songs with the same feeling and purpose that he did.

Plus, you have the lovely Honkettes.

Also, Rickey Medlocke and Greg T. Walker of Blackfoot were each in the band shortly before Lynyrd SKynyrd made it big. I realize this is a sort of honorable mention, but Medlocke paired with Rossington is something special.

I'm not so sure it's that cut and dry.

I will acknowledge that CCR has about 10-15 of some of my favorite songs in music, but as I have said before...Lynyrd Skynyrd wrote anthems, not just songs.

AC/DC did the same thing for hard rock. No one will ever say that Malcolm and Angus Young are masterful songwriters on par with the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, etc., but you have to acknowledge that when it comes to making 20,000+ people belt out song lyrics at full volume along with the lead singer and with a ferocity and passion like no other, AC/DC is about as good as it gets.

The same can be said about Lynyrd Skynyrd for Southern rock with songs like "Sweet Home Alabama", "Free Bird", "Call Me The Breeze", "Simple Man", and the often forgot "All I Can Do Is Write About It". Some of these songs have become the brunt of jokes because of their widespread popularity, but that tends to happen when a song plays such a prominent role in mainstream culture. Some people seem to hate the Beatles for the same reason.

Still, this is a damn good debate to be had. Fogerty is one of the greats, and it's almost inconceivable to think of how much music they released in such a limited amount of time.
