I’m not extremely familiar with these guys.
What’s the first album or two I should listen to get a good feel for them?

quote:Can't help you with albums, but I never paid them much attention until I heard Tears Don't Matter Much. That song made me mix them in with Son Volt, Slobberbone, Jayhawks and Old 97s etc.

I got a hold of a bootleg of Attic Tapes back around 2000-2001. Its a demo so a little rough quality wise but it made me a fan. They have since released it as an album so its easy to find. Like most bands, their first 3 or 4 albums are a good place to start. A lot of people don't like Ben Nichols voice, its gravely from too much whiskey and cigarettes, but I think he sounds great for the type music they play. I've seen them live in little bars several times and always enjoy the show.

Lucero have some solid albums but they are first and foremost a live band, 2 hours and hardly ever the same setlist -
Here's a pro shot live show from last year
Lucero @ Salvage Station Asheville NC 5-5-2022

Sorry it took me two weeks to see this.
Lucero is my favorite band, and I have seen them all over the country. One of the few bands I listen to that I will travel for.
1372 Overton Park
Texas & Tennessee
Rebels Rogues and Sworn Brothers
Women & Work
Really, just go listen to Live from Terminal West in Atlanta, then go listen to Live at Red Rocks, that way you get a feel with and without horns (they will be without horns in BR in Oct)

I saw them last year. They're definitely worth seeing. The bass player was hilarious. He'd sit off to the side of the stage between songs and come back when his part came in on the next song.

Then go listen to “The Last Pale Light in the West” solo album by Ben Nichols

Anybody else going - don't show up too late, unless you want to walk because parking will be a bitch because of 13th Gate - make sure to tell the dude in the parking lot you have tickets, or at least mention LUCERO
