But he admits that the idea of playing songs every night from 2019’s Sound & Fury — a bitterly funny synth-blooze dystopian guitar-hero opus that divided fans and critics — seems painful.

He said in a previous interview that if he did a “down the middle country album again, he probably would have ended up committing suicide.”

The more I read on him, the more I think he hates making music. I know he loves music, but he hates the music industry and all the things that come with it. Wouldn’t surprise me if he just walked away.

So have many other musicians. His stance is nothing new. He will probably figure out a way to do what he wants to do like Neil Young, Willie Nelson, Waylon, Dwight Yoakum, etc, etc.

Good read, Thanks.

Sturgill mentioned his guitar playing. I saw him open for GnR a couple of years ago. Ole boy ripped it and rocked out. He was the best guitarist I saw that night.

Sturgill’s “woe is me, I make a lot of money playing music every day but I hate it” attitude is starting to get a little old. We get it dude, you hate the music machine. But do we really need to hear it every time he opens his mouth now.

Totally agree. He also is always complaining like he only makes music for record deals.

He never mentions how much his fans love his music in his interviews. It just seems like he is perpetually pissed off.

Poor old Sturgill Simpson. Hated his life working for the railroad. Wife encourages him to give music a try, because of his obvious talents.

Now with a net worth upwards of $5 million, he's still, bitching and whining. He's just a miserable dude, who's music is getting progressively shittier with each album.

Latest album isn’t shitty at all. It’s just a departure of the sound that made him popular. It’s a bad arse rock and roll record.

That he already hates

I love the new album, don’t like the piss poor attitude but there’s a good chance that Sturg is simply a massively depressed individual. Many of the great ones are.

It's like he wrote the whole thing as a "frick you" to Nashville, and then it actually ended up doing well and he made Nashville even more money, which probably pissed him off.

I really enjoy it and love the movie.

quote:

"So I just sat down and wrote a bunch of mad shite-talking songs about how fricking awesome we are. And then we recorded it. And then I said, 'Man, this isn't weird enough. I should probably go to Japan and, like, get the five most legendary animation directors in history together and get them all drunk and put them to competition to see who can outdo one another, and we'll just animate the whole fricking album.'

Good interview, Sturgill has always been negative and depressed. IDGAF, just keep the art flowing.
