Interesting tidbit about Little Feat from wiki:
quote:

There are three legends about the genesis of Little Feat. One has it that George showed Zappa his song "Willin'," and that Zappa fired him from the Mothers of Invention, because he felt that George was too talented to merely be a member of his band, and told him he ought to go away and form his own band. The second version has Zappa firing him for playing a 15-minute guitar solo—with his amplifier off. The third version says that Zappa fired him because "Willin'" contains drug references ("weed, whites and wine"). George often introduced the song as the reason he was asked to leave the band. On Oct 18, 1975 at the Auditorium Theater in Rochester New York while introducing the song, George commented that he was asked to leave the band for "writing a song about dope"

if Zappa really kicked Lowell George out of his band for writing Willin, then that is the most un rock and roll thing I have ever heard of

I've heard that the reason George played the slide is because he cut his left hand while unloading gear for a show. He couldn't move his fingers like he wanted and made the decision to just play slide the whole show. Crowd apparently loved it and the rest is history. I have no clue if that's true or not

One of the advantages of being older (older, not old muthafrickahs) is that one had the opportunity to see some acts in their real prime or, even more importantly, still alive. Saw Little Feat with LG in Jackson, MS, in the 70's. (And just to piss off Wise and a couple of others, I'll remind them that I also Jimi Hendrix and The Allman Brothers with both Duane and Berry. )

I always thought it was for drug use too but find it hard to believe he was kicked out for lyrics about drugs as Zappa was so outspoken about being against censorship
