Let's talk about CC DeVille from Poison

This dude is arguably one of the greatest American guitarists of all time. (Come at me bro)
If not for him Poison most definitely doesn't touch the success they did. Yes he's that badass.
He obviously got caught up in drugs way too much and fricked his career up, but damn this dude could've been a legend if he would've stayed somewhat sober. The interwebs say he actually beat out Slash for the Poison guitar gig.
Discuss.

Him beating out Slash had more to do with Slash not being down with the look of poison. CC was a natural fit.
I remember kicking the shite out of the songs they had. There was no denying that I could play them but there was an issue about makeup and stuff. Bobby Dall [POISON bassist] asked me what kind of shoes I was going to wear. I was, like, 'What?' It was kind of obvious that this was going to go nowhere. As I was walking out of the audition, C.C. DeVille was walking in. He had on pancake makeup and a ton of hairspray. I actually remember thinking right then, 'That should be the guy.'

Yeah he was definitely a better fit. But also the interwebs say CC didn't play anything they provided him in his audition, he played his own shite which lead to their first and biggest hits.
I guess CC and Brett were at odds from day 1.

No hes not. He was in band that was the poster boy for a shitty genre.
That band isnt know for their guitar work. He couldnt stand next to Darrell Abbott.

I beg to differ. You can hate the genre, but he fricking killed that genre. And he's a very established guitar player.
And I would never compare him to Dimebag because they played an entirely different genre of music. CC is a very underrated guitarist. Don't let his teased hair fool you.

CC Deville was very adequate.

Then one of the greatest American guitarists in hair metal? I can give him that.
But when it's just greatest American guitarists..immediately I think of Randy Rhoads & Dimebag. And those are just 2 of the obvious ones. there are plenty though, especially in the melodic sub genres of metal.

Jimi Hendrix
Randy Rhodes
Eddie Van Halen
Kirk Hammett
Slash
Chuck Berry
BB King
Lindsey Buckingham
Eric Johnson
Nancy Wilson
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Off the top of my head -
Edit - and I actually like Poison - Talk Dirty to Me is crankable.

How big a list comprises

And do you want to narrow down the genre as well. Because he's not as good as Slash.
I couldn't find a single place that had put together a list of great guitar player that had CC Deville on it (they all had Billy Gibbons, Slash, and Hendrix) except for VH1 who, in 2015, ranked him as the most underrated hair metal guitarist of the '80s.

He was a really good, probably even great, guitar player by most people's standards, just not "greatest" category of good. If you think he was the driver for the success of Poison, you severely underestimate the buying power of the 16-30 year old American female.

Poison was easily my least favorite band of that genre.

I understand this. I mean, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Kirk Hammett are all Americans, too.
Even for 80s/90s glam metal (hair metal, if you will), George Lynch and Mick Mars are certainly guys I would prefer over Deville, although I do not deny Deville was a talented guitar player.
I mean, that was my era. I tended to like the NWOBHM acts better, particularly Def Leppard (and they were a huge influence on those L.A. cats as the scene was unfolding). And, like I say all the time, those cats could flat out play. With anyone. Particularly the guitarists.
Even Night Ranger's Brad Gillis was badass.

Also popped in my head as guys I liked better
Billy Gibbons
Rick Nielsen
Robert Johnson
Skunk Baxter
And I like Poison as well, just don't think DeVille is in the same stratosphere as some of those others.

Fine, maybe I had a little too much to drink last night and got caught up in watching old Poison videos on YouTube.
One of the Greatest American guitarists of all time is a stretch, but I'll stick by he could've climbed much higher on that last had he not been a druggie lunatic.
I'll admit I'm a big 80's hair metal fan. I think that genre gets shite on too much music wise because everyone focuses on the cheesiness. But most of them were extremely talented musicians, especially compared to today's standards.
From a musical standpoint I indeed think he was. Sure Bret was the one who was bringing those 16-30 year old girls in, but CC helped write their biggest hits. I don't think they'd have been near as successful without him.

This particular solo is just badass. I implore anyone to watch it. And if you want a real kick watch the whole video and be blown away by cheesiness yet greatness.

Haha, this is a funny thread. CC was pretty bad compared to the crazy amount of guitar virtuosos just within that one genre of music. Literally just about every band on the Sunset Strip had a better guitarist than him. Poison's success was in a savant-like ability to come up with mildly catchy hooks while dressed like they were going to a gay Halloween party. That's it.
It's a pretty decisive consensus among fans of this kind of music that the guitar solo on Swallow This Live is the most pathetic display ever recorded.

Come on.
He isn't even on the short list American hair metal guitarists.

I think we agree on this, I initially read it as commercial success. I do think he is underrated.

A lot of us like it more than we want to admit.

People shite on that genre because of the image, but it’s amazing at how fast it produced quality guitarist, drummers, and a vocalist like Sebastian Bach.
