Let’s say you are trying to introduce someone to 90’s indie rock (Built to Spill, Dismemberment Plan, Yo La Tengo, Guided By Voices, etc). We’re looking for about 20 or so individual tracks. What are some songs that you would include?

Keeping it at one per artist, I’d probably go something like this:

Built to Spill- Carry the Zero
My Bloody Valentine- Sometimes
Pavement- Gold Soundz
Guided By Voices- Game of Pricks
Belle and Sebastian- Seeing Other People
The Dismemberment Plan- A Life of Possibilities
Modest Mouse- Trailer Trash
Neutral Milk Hotel- Holland 1945
Elliot Smith- Say Yes
Yo La Tengo- From a Motel 6
The Stone Roses- Fools Gold
The Halo Benders- Virginia Reel Around the Fountain
Wilco- A Shot in the Arm
The Olivia Tremor Control- I Have Been Floated
The Flaming Lips- Race for the Prize
Radiohead- Paranoid Android
Red House Painters- Katy Song
Sleater-Kinney- Dig Me Out
Slint- Good Morning Captain
Spiritualized- Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space

For me it would be all Modest Mouse and Neutral Milk Hotel, they were the best 90's indie bands by a mile.

ETA: Would put Earth Died Screaming by Tom Waits on there.

I think it still fits in with the sound. Built to Spill's Perfect From Now On and Modest Mouse's The Moon and Antartica were both major label releases and they are always considered indie classics.

Fool´s Gold is an ´89 tune, as well.

You’ve got the idea. One song per artist, and I agree with a lot of your list. With Built to Spill it’s either Carry the Zero or Randy Described Eternity. With Modest Mouse it’s Dramamine, or Trailer Trash. Dismemberment Plan, for me it might be The City.

I'll also probably add:
Fugazi - Repeater or Waiting Room
Archers of Loaf - The Lowest Part Is Free
Unwound - All Soul's Day

Yeah, these artists have so many great tracks, there are tons of reasonable options to choose.

You guys are right on Fools Gold. I think the US single was released in '90, but it did first come out in '89.

The Only One I Know- Charlatans

IS a 90´s tune, and will do nicely in the place of Fool´s Gold. IMNSHO
