dude, they CHANGED THEIR WHOLE LOOK AND SOUND TO SELL RECORDS
I don't know how else to explain that to you.
I saw the pic the first time you posted. First, the difference is noticeable but it's not like a fricking tsunami or something (actually, they look like rubes rubes from Oklahoma or Tennessee in the first pic . . . oh, wait . . .)
There is absolutely nothing wrong with getting spiffed up for a band pic. Especially when you're becoming popular. shite, bands have been doing it for fricking forty years, dude. Hell, the band I was in when I was a teenager wasted a whole afternoon doing a photo for flyers because the lead singer had to get his look right (he was a damned good singer, though). It's not a big deal.

Of course they do, but its not an easy living either and you know it.
They are most certainly living a MUCH easier life right now and I can't fault them as humans for making that decision.
I can fault them as artists though and I do. Like you said earlier they sold their integrity and the attitude that got them where they were in the first place for a few million screaming teenagers.
And it shocked the hell out of me. I remember the first time I heard Four Kicks and thinking holy shite this is actually real Rock N Roll. Then I started looking into them and I honestly never could've predicted having this conversation about them.

It is a big deal when your whole persona is based around being dirty rock n roll.
Imagine if Kurt Cobain would've cut his hair, shaved and started wearing suits ties designer shoes shades on stage. KOL made a change that is exactly what that would have been.

I guess I've become really jaded. That just sounds like such a cliche' critique (I honestly don't mean that as a criticism directed of your opinion, really).

Just because it is clique doesn't keep it from being true.

Any band would be boring if they stayed exactly the same.

(what the frick is up with all the reverb on the new songs?)
That goddamned reverb. The true indicator of a sellout.

their looks.
See posts above.
I give up. Opinions are like assholes. Mine just happens to smell like rosewater.

When they put out Holy Roller Novocaine they said Jared couldn't even play the bass yet. They played their songs faster since they weren't as good on the guitars yet. They really are an amazing story.

I guess I feel like I do about this band is because I essentially grew up with them. saw them change from who they were to this arena rock joke they have become (they admit to as much)
listening to this:
trani live

The live video of them playing trani at bonnaroo is incredible.

Actually, I believe there is truth to that.
Motherfrickers screwed everything up and learned how to play.
Actually, that's related to one of my points above. Bands evolve.

I'm in the same boat. I was 15 years old when I fell in love with KOL and loved them for years and still listen to their old albums on a weekly basis yet I wouldn't even bother going to one of their live shows now and thats a fricking shame.

you're missing the point
the rolling stones have been rocking for 50 years
has anyone ever called them sellouts? ever?
you can still have some integrity and rock

yeah, I know the whole backstory. they were one of my favorite bands many moons ago.

I agree that I don't want to hear the same album over and over, but you can't say that the quality of KoL's albums hasn't slid in the last 5 years. They make uninteresting mediocre pop rock now.
crazy to see them go from songs talking about cocaine and rock and roll to "sex on fire"
Posted on 7/3/12 at 1:01 am to TheDoc
Well according to VOR we don't need this board or music journalism. Criticism is not legitimate. A band can do whatever it wants to do without any repercussions or backlash from their fans. I can't hear you because you're on your high horse. They sell records so they must be doing something right...give me a break. That way of thinking is why so many bands cop out and lose who they were and why they started making music.

As an addendum, while 'Sex on Fire' and 'Use Somebody' are in fact, way overplayed, they are decent songs. Those just happen to be this particular group's flagship bandwagon songs. All the big-name bands have those. And naturally, they will receive some negative feedback for those tracks. Just part of the process.
I do think "use somebody" is a good song that was simply overplayed. I can't say the same for "sex on fire". I never liked that one.

If memory serves me correctly, Ryan Adams' producer and the son of either the great Glyn Johns or Andy Johns (producers and engineers).
Dat boy good!!
I can't Ryan Adams. I actively dislike that guy.
