that really stinks...the joy is my favorite live venue in the city. easy to get to, easy to park, easy to walk to get food or drink, great sound and set-up
MG world is a let down
Had to happen, fri / sat at Joy this year was so packed it almost took away from the experience, almost. Tough to get a drink, people constantly trying to walk through the packed crowd, etc. With they would have done something with some seating so you can sort of get aligned and not have to deal with all of that.
But when some hippie dude swinging dreads in your face during the middle of that scar help slip fire double decker sandwich, it means its time to switch to a bigger venue. Wish they had made a better choice but i'm happy with the move even though the Joy is a stellar jazz fest venue.

One less person to compete with tickets for the cover band selling out shows in minutes. That's a-ok by me.
They turn the amazing catalog of Dead music on its head. Make familiar songs very unfamiliar. They aren't restricted by the "formula" of a Grateful Dead show. They throttle down from the first song, and you better hold on. Not everyone can handle their intensity and the teases they throw all over the place.
Never seen a JRAD show described as "alright".
I've listened to nearly every JRAD show i could find over hte past tow years and you can probably count on one hand the times they didn't quite get to their normal level. They are just so consistent and are absolutely rocking within 10 minutes of nearly every show. Its incredible.

i went both nites and didnt think it was that bad...packed for sure but thats to be expected. sat 2nd set we were pretty spent so we went upstairs and it was very chill & comfortable
anyone know what capacity at the joy is?
literally any other venue than MG World would have been a better choice
NOLA really needs an amphitheatre

The Joy is 1200. The problem is most other venues in the city are about the same or less. And there aren't a whole lot of options for the next step up. Mardi Gras World is about 3000. Comparables that immediately come to mind would be the Saenger Theatre at 2600 and Mahalia Jackson at 2250, both of which are fully seated venues.

upstairs is a whole different animal and its empty because everyone goes down to the floor for a reason despite where they buy seats

It really is worth your time to listen to each and every JRAD show you can get your hands on.

Listening to 3-16-17 with Oteil sitting in for Drewitz right now. This Shakedown with Stuart bogie on horn.
Oteil singing Dark Star (as the 2nd song) was nice as well.

The Black Throated wind w/ Oteil from that run is amazing

JRAD is so much different that tGD to compare them to a band that literally tries to recreate a dead show is one of the dumber things I have heard in a while. Russo himself has described it as freakout punk dead or something like that before and its pretty accurate. They play so fast and there are so many switches and teases in the improv. Two completely different animals over the same stellar songbook.

Don't get me started on Cream Puff War
Even the Grateful Dead couldn't touch Panic's version

Yeah, Black Throated Wind that Marco took into Royals by Lorde. Love it.
JRAD has all the information of the jam scene to build on. GD created the scene. They were flying by the seat of their pants. Russo and the guys are amazing musicians that grew up in the scene.
Give a listen to Tom Hamilton on The Sound Podcast. He explains JRAD vs. GD well, and rips the host/jam scene a new one which is also very entertaining.
They started as a one-off band. Threw together for a party in NYC. 100+ shows later....
