He’s too talented to not have good melodies, he’s a master at that. Musically it sounds good. His problem is the cheesy fricking lyrics. The two albums for him that are phenomenal are Continuum and Born and Raised. Everything else has this exact same issue, cheesy lyricism.

While I won’t defend how douchey he was for a very long portion of his famed career, he does seem to have made adjustments and changes. He considers himself a recovering egomaniac, and since his throat issues causing him to move to Montana for a while, seem to be a much more down to earth guy. The guy who wrote vultures and gravity also wrote body is a wonderland, and that’s the give and take of John Mayer

I cant really think of any major artist that bats a 1000, and Mayer himself explained that he credits his success to allowing his producers major input in his records, so sticks with what works most of the time, even if it is occasionally wrong.

I’ve seen him live 5 times I’m a huge fan of the guy but I feel like he’s trying too hard to stay relevant in pop. I don’t see him being a top 40 hit monster again, why not go for more substance? And I actually dig the new track a lot outside of the lyrics

He knows how to play the game is what it is.
Watched him on First We Feast a few days ago. It was a really good interview. He says in the interview that he purposely does songs for the public (poppy shite) and songs for himself (bluesy shite). He does say that he wished that the songs he does for himself were more popular than the songs he does for the general public.
