re: John Mayer or Dave Matthews?

I've seen Dave and it was a fun show for the 2 1/2 hours he played, but CocoLoco has a point about the complexity of JM's songs. Even in his early stuff like Neon and 3x5, his guitar style has a lot of depth, intriguing tuning, and lots of various layers.

He destroys damn near any guitarist of this generation. I've been playing guitar since I was a child, and his guitar playing alone makes me respect him along with being a fan. He belongs in a class with Trucks, Frusciante, Bonamassa, Jack White, and a handful of others for the best.
While I agree that all of the guitarists you mentioned are fantastic, there's a significant list that belongs up there with them. Popularity is not an indicator of talent. Fredrik Thordendal, Devin Townsend, Ian Williams, Spencer Seim, DP Holmes, Chris Letchford, Daniel Johns, Mikael Akerfeldt, and on. He's definitely talented. I just think people get carried away with pedestals.

Haven't heard of all of those, but have heard a few and they are great as well. I named some that most would know as great guitar players. Quite a few really great ones, but they are still rare gems, including the ones you named. Referring to people that not only can have technique and form, which anyone can learn, but have feeling, phrasing, and creativity which you can't teach.

Mayer and it's really not that close.

Mayer is a better song writer, and better musician. He writes a few pop songs to help sell his albums, but his "pop" songs are almost always well written, and fairly complex musically. He has remained relevant while changing his style on every one of his albums. He is also a ridiculous guitar player. Even if you think he's a douche, you can't deny his talent as a guitarist.
i can't disagree with most of this, but i agree with bullet option.

John Mayer live.
I don't care even a little for DMB. Hate them. John Mayer I can enjoy watching his live music.
Example: Crossroads with Clapton.
