Did he ever play pedal steel? I think he only ever played lap steel (both acoustic & electric).
Same goes for Gilmour.

I could be conflating pedal and lap. Steve Howe also plays one or the other on "To Be Over". Forgot about that one, and there could be more. He does play both a Fender pedal steel and a lap steel, but I'm not sure what he uses where.

I'll have to dig back into my Yes collection to investigate. I think steel guitar in general is one of the most beautiful instruments when played tastefully. The prettiest steel guitar I can think of is David Lindley's part in Running on Empty by Jackson Browne. I believe he plays that on an old pre-WWII Rickenbacker Electro B. I have a newer model of that guitar from about 1950.
Another guy I have a lot of respect for is Jerry Douglas, most widely known as the dobro player for Union Station. His solo work is really amazing. John Butler is also a bad arse.

Didn't have a true appreciation for pedal steel until I moved to Nashville years ago.These days, guys like Speedy West & Paul Franklin are favorites of mine. It's a warped instrument, as are many of the players who take on the challenge. I imagine they might take to a helicopter fairly smoothly, or at least bravely.
Love the whiskey crying stuff, but really dig the western, coyote vibe most. Wouldn't really say it's dying, but it's one of the 1st chairs to be axed by artists eyeing their bottom line on tour lately.

There's a guy named Kenny Brown who plays it around Alabama with different bands. Played on Dallas Dorsey's record, it brings such an awesome effect to the songs.
