I don't think so. He basically embodies everything you want in a frontman.

No, Kurt Cobain is the most overrated rock icon of all time.

Jim Morrison was great.

He's a perfect rock icon. He's overrated as a singer.

I don't know if he's the most overrated, but he's right there near the top. Known more for his doping than singing.

Hard to say. Me personally I think of him as a great rock singer, fine songwriter, but hardly the mystical shaman/poet/whatever that has become part of the legend. I also believe that Morrison and the Doors' enduring presence in the world of rock is largely due to the tireless efforts of Ray Manzarek, who, over 4+ decades, kept the band's music and mystery alive to succeeding generations of rock fans. Having grown up in the 60's and 70's, I can say that by 1976 and 77, the Doors were fading into obscurity. Their resurrection began with the inclusion of "The End" as part of the sound track to "Apocalypse Now."

hell no. Jim was a freaking mega rock star.

This!!!!!

Realize he was only relevant for 5 years or so. All that music in 5 damned years. On top of that he fell completely apart in 5 years. From a 23 year old sex symbol lizard king to just a 27 year old bloated dude who was an absolute wreck.

The Doors and Ford. Hey, a gig's a gig, presumably they made a buck or two for their efforts. I wonder what the Ford Motor Co. would've said about its affiliation with the Doors after the group became famously infamous in the summer of '69.

When Jim wasn't fricking around, and on his game, the Doors could play with anybody.

No.

Your statement of him being "overrated" is insinuating that he wasn't talented or worthy of being famous; The guy had pipes and his lyrics, while maybe ambiguous, were beautiful.

If Morrison was overrated then I'd say Ian Curtis and Morrisey would be up there alongside him...but I wouldn't make that claim.

Did anyone here go to the Nite City concert at the Kingfish in Baton Rouge circa 1977? The only time I got to Ray Manzerek in concert...

I think apocalypse Now is what made him really big. He had a nice run in the 60s, but not the iconic status that the movie made him out to be.m
