Sure, on some of their tours. But that doesn't make them a jam band. No doubt, they take off on extended, jazz/bluesy/rock solos . . . but they're not a jam band.

But being a blues band doesn't disqualify a band from being a jam band. As a matter of fact you'd be hard pressed to find a jam band who didn't have quite a few blues sounds.
Then a freestyle poetry troupe is also a jam band. Oh, and they suck too.
Here's the question: does the band have the ability to merely play instruments? Or can they actually construct songs and stuff? The latter is an end, the former a means to an end. A jam band is a poetry slam meetup group + a homeless guy with two sticks and a plastic bucket. I don't care if it sounded awesome from 10:23-10:28pm when the homeless percussionist and MC Cerebral Cedric really were vibing...it still sucks. If you don't have enough talent to make decent songs, you suck.
And, btw, the grateful dead suck too.

Not really that, but if we are calling things "jam bands" I don't see how ABB doesn't count.
