Ellington 55 is a Duke Ellington album in hi fidelity (but monaural) which just kicks butt. I would love to link "Flying Home" but it is the one song on youtube that has a copyright block. The trumpeter on that song makes the trumpet scream (and not in an annoying way).

Every song has strong solos. 3:30 or so on the song below has some trumpeter kicking butt.

Here's Rockin' in Rhythm:

I was supposed to be out horseback riding with a picnic, but it is raining like mad today - good day to listen to some music.

Big Band music is absolutely awesome. Grew up listening to Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Woody Herman, Count Basie, Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey and many others. It is music that absolutely transcends its era. I could still listen to it all day.

Sing, Sing, Sing (with that Swing) - Benny Goodman (Gene Krupa on drums)

A Jazz & Ellington lover checking in.

Professionally it wasn't Duke at his best , but good stuff from the past.

My favorite post Swing albums by Duke are Afro-Eurasian Eclipse(1971) & Far East Suite (1967). Duke was still brilliant(despite being about 70 ears old) & making originl albums nearly comparable to is 1940's best.

Check those 2 albums out for late career Eliington.

Duke was at his absolute peak in the late 30's & early 40's . Check out his "Blanton Webster" box sets & a recent purchase of mine which is an early career overview; "The Masterpieces 1926-49.

Without listening to Flying Home that trumpeter is probably Cat Anderson a replacement for the great Cootie Williams. Andersons high register trumpeting was a bit much at times & I prefer Cootie.

Ellington was still recording great original albums in the late 60's& early 70's(Eclipse & Far East Suite as I mentioned above being his best I feel).

Love the old Big Bands as well , but like the modern small groups(quintets,sextets,septets..) interpretations of Duke Ellington by the many adoring young Jazz musicians.

Big Bands can be a bit unwieldly at times & Jazz is at its very best in smaller combos.

If you like Big Bands check out Sun Ra "Jazz in Silhoutte"(one of my favorites).

Ellington at Newport, New Orleans Suite, Blues in Orbit, and Lois Armstrong & Duke Ellington are always in heavy rotation on my stereo system. Classic music that withstands time.

I love swing dancing. Where I sometimes swing dance there is an old guy around 50 who is a fantastic dance partner - he knows every move.

Duke and Trane album is actually pretty good. No big band. Just the two of them.

"In a sentimental mood" is the 1st jazz song I became obsessed with.

GOAT jazz tune for me.

On a dreary day, I can put this tune on repeat and listen to it a thousand times and never tire of it.
