Define ´THAT´. As in Michael Jackson big? Madonna big?

They were pretty damned close....

Madonna doesn't get her own day in New Orleans.

If you can measure "big" by completely changing the music industry in an extremely short period of time, I'd say Nirvana have a legit claim as the biggest band ever.

Honestly though, "big" doesn't mean jack shite. Britney Spears is big. Justin Beiber is big. Who cares? Just means there are a lot of people out there with horrendous taste in music.

Best defines the 90s for me?

Stone Temple Pilots
Soundgarden
Nirvana
Pearl Jam
Red Hot Chili Peppers

and somewhere way down the list would be 311. Down and Love Song are the only songs that are still listenable to me today.

I'm not saying 311 is the worst band I've ever heard, I'm simply saying they're in the conversation.

Rolling Stone magazine says it's Phish.
"Given their sense of community, their ambition and their challenging, generous performances, Phish have become the most important band of the Nineties."

The AVERAGE person did not discover 311 until their 3rd album and the summer of 1996. How do they define the 90's when most people not addicted to college radio and not from Omaha had no idea who they even were. You might as well argue that Fiona Apple set the standards.

Maybe op meant to say that 311's "sound" best defines the 90s more than nirvana and grunge music

The 90's are best defined by:

Grunge: Alice in Chains, PJ, etc...
Industrial: NIN
West Coast Rap: Dr. Dre, Snoop, etc...
