How underrated/forgotten is Billy Preston?

played with Little Richard,Sam Cooke,Ray Charles, only artist to be co-credited with The Beatles and practically was the only reason Let It Be was completed. Had memorable solo career as well.
Is he just too overshadowed by Stevie and Ray? Did funk not last long enough for him to be the national consciousness of great artists?
Plus he had one of the greatest Afro's of all time

Always thought he was highly ranked by real music fans. "Outta Space" is an all-time classic of funk feaux sheaux.

Listen to the album "Brussels Affair '73". Billy plays keys and does some back up vocals. Also check out "Love You Live" and "L.A. Friday - '75". 'Outta Space' is performed as Billy solo with the Stones backing him on the L.A. albums. The call and response between Jagger and Preston on 'Get off Of My Cloud' is great!

right,but as you can see Fifth Beatle pertains to several individuals ...and his great career extends beyond his work with the Beatles. If anything, I'd say being lumped into "Fifth Beatle" status downplays his work.
However, saying he is the only artist to be co-credited with The Beatles speaks to much higher acclaim.

Saw him perform when he opened for George Harrison at the assembly center in 1973.

By Stevie, maybe, but Ray was in a different category, anyway. I'd think you might throw in Isaac Hayes in here as well.
I think Preston dealt with a lot of issues in the 70s. Certainly there was a market - you had Parliament/Funkadelic, Stevie's 70s stuff, The Meters, bands like EWF and the Commodores all had a funk vibe (and funk shaped disco, which hurts its legacy, a little, by association) - and, beyond his personal demons, Preston also seemed content to support larger than life acts such as the Beatles and later, The Rolling Stones - also an unofficial member of that band, making several tours with them in the 1970s.
But, it is hard to argue that he is probably the most influential keyboardist in rock music from the Beatles on, with apologies to Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles.
