How to improve your vocals?

I suck at singing!!! What are some things I need to do to improve? I only play the guitar and dogs start howling when I attempt to sing and play.

Same here. I got an app but it was a joke. I'd like to learn of a legit app etc (and I'm being cheap about it so I'm looking for free or close to it)

Why in the hell did I get a downvote?

Wasn't me... douche bags are everywhere don't sweat it.
PS - if you want to throw some money at it you could take voice lessons obviously.

Simple vocal exercises work wonders.
1 & 5 are the best imo

Record yourself on your phone. Listen to it a lot.
Then try different stuff - open your mouth wider, try breathing more from your stomach/chest, etc. Sing along with a song, sing single notes with a piano or guitar. record all of it. Compare the recordings.
In my experience singing is less about altering your abilities and more about learning how you sound and what your tendencies are so you can get better at correcting your deficiencies.

Don't smoke. Practice.

Also, a big part of it is finding your range and tailoring your singing voice. I see people trying to sing in the same keys as they hear songs in and get stuck in that. Best way to do that is to just change the key of whatever song you're trying to sing until it works for your vocal range.

Cause you can't sing, baw!
I didn't do it for the record.
There is a YouTube channel for everything, but I did see a long haired guy who had a channel and a class/site. Talking about vocal cord compression etc.
Some of it sounded legit, but I saw one video where he was tying to "teach" someone to sing like Chris Cornell.
I am sure Cornell works at it, but most of that is just his given voice.

Thanks! I'm going to try to record myself, and listen to just how bad I am.

I can't speak for others, but I've increased my range by stretching it. Yeah I sounded like hell doing it, but eventually I was able to hit the higher notes easier and clearer.
As far as the quality of a vocal, I try to imitate the singer and the various quirks and techinques that make them unique / special on certain notes or overall sound. Then when I sing other material some of their notes and sound carries over to mine without being an imiation.
Don't know if this makes sense but it worked for me.

I think there are substantial limits on how much a voice can be improved You can go from excruciating to tolerable, but if you can't *sing* you're never gonna be able to *sing*.
