How in the world is Ghost considered metal?

I think the bigger question is how in the world were Sevendust, Slipknot, and August Burns Red nominated for a Grammy? Not that awards like that mean anything in today's music world.

I'll spare you the cliche argument that it's because the Grammy's are clueless about any and all music genres outside of the commercial mainstream.

To answer your question, I'm not sure either. Metal is such a vast-encompassing form of music that can be as beautiful as it can be brutal. It can move at the speed of light or trudge along like a sloth through the trees.

Every time I think I have a concrete definition of metal conceptualized, I hear a new band or artist that completely obliterates my impression of what falls under the metallic umbrella.

However, I am confident to say that Ghost is borderline metal at best. They are much more aligned with '70s hard rock outfits than they are with the contemporary heavyweights of the metal genre. I think their image and theatricality contribute much more to the label than their actual sound, which should not be the case in the least bit.

Hell, for all the shite pitched by Tool fans whenever the band is likened to metal in any capacity, Tool is substantially more metal than Ghost. Mastodon, another prog outfit who has flirted with the metal taglines since their inception, also clearly possesses some of the usual tropes of metal music.

Ghost is definitely hard rock. Are they metal? Not in my opinion.

I'm not a fan of Ghost's satanic vibe. I really like a few of their songs, but prefer to not blast 'Belial, Behemoth, Beelzebub, Asmodeus, Satanas, Lucifer
Belial, Behemoth, Beelzebub, Asmodeus, Satanas, Lucifer' across the house. Wife wouldn't be too thrilled.

On that note, these guys are definitely more hard rock than true metal. Trivium, Bullet for My Valentine, Parkway Drive, etc would be considered metal in today's world.

I really hope the lack of applause was due to their openness in worshiping Satan as opposed to just a complete disrespect for actual musical talent. It's a shame that one of the last true genres that "create" their own music gets no airtime and no respect.
