do you think its fair to compare guitarists from different genres? Joe Bonamassa and Clapton are great blues men, but is it fair to say they are = to Eddie Van Halen inasmuch as they dont play the same styles? (And no, I'm not saying EVH is the best RNR guy out there, just using him as an example)

Why do you need to compare them at all? This is not the MSB

Beacause I often hear comparisons made and was wondering if those who actually play think its possible (fair) to compare performers from different genres/styles.

personally, i dont think you can.

It's a really subjective topic.

You can only compare them in their respective styles or genres.

When it comes to guitar playing, I'm not a fan of shredders, although I do respect their craft. It just does nothing for me.

A guy like Joe Bonamassa can make me feel every note he plays. It might not be as difficult, from a technical standpoint like some guy sweeping and hitting a million notes, but it's just so much more tasteful.

No it's probably not fair. For example in country, Paisley and Urban are both ridiculous.

But it's hard to compare them to the other greats in different genres. Too many different styles. Even within country. Zac Brown is pretty damn good but its a completely different style.

Any comparison is subjective. Feel free to make any comparisons to guitarists that you decide to make. Your opinion is relevant to you.
