Got a new Custom 22 ten-top with bird inlays a few years ago for $2250...wouldn't trade it for any guitar out there...(also, got a new Martin D-41 same way...walked into Guitar Center with 25 $100 bills and said take it or leave it)

For every 5 Les Paul's I would play, I'd maybe buy one...PRS just has the consistency thing down...

If you can find one you like, go with it...(then find a Mesa Dual Rectifier head and cabinet you like and go to town)

I *think* I can give you a great first hand review of it compared to other brands and how the PRS sounds in various applications.

I have about 12 guitars (5 of which are electric; Les Paul, an older PRS CE 24 which they don't make anymore, 1 american and 1 mexican strat, and a '72 re-issue vintage tele)

The custom 24, in my opinion, has the most well rounded, "mid-range/fat" tone, without sacrificing some of the "bite" you would find in a fender strat. (It doesn't quite have the "bite" of a single coil, but it can get fairly close on a few of the middle pickup settings)

Tone: I would say tonally it's almost like you're playing a Les Paul, without the back-ache! (My LP is heavy!!) I love that the PRS can get the same exact fatness that my LP gets, in a much lighter instrument. The pickups that I have are the 59/09's which are the standard pickups found in most higher end PRS's now. They are very similar to the PAF type pickups you would find in a Gibson LP. The 5 way blade switch gives you the chance to get that single coil type sound in the middle pickups as I mentioned.

Neck: Carson, I don't know if you like thin or thick necks, but I went ahead and got the pattern THIN neck as I'm more of a shredder type player (not only rock, but I could use this guitar is some jazz/fusion settings too and make it work). The pattern REGULAR neck is the other option which is the neck similar to a Les Paul 50's style neck - little bit more bulky, but some players like the fatness of it.

Studio setting: I'm currently recording a rock record with one of my old bandmates from Baton Rouge scene in years past - he and I are using the Line6 pod farm for our guitar tones and I'll be honest, I'm going back over my old LP tracks and using the PRS to record over it. It has a much more smoother sound and I find that even the clean tones are a little bit crisper than on the LP. I'm also working on a few country songs that i'm submitting to a publisher in Nashville, and I'll bet I can make this guitar work for that too. Between a mix of my tele/prs I should have a good tonal array to choose from in my mix.

Live setting: I haven't had a chance to play this guitar live yet, as I just got it in from Sweetwater last month. I have a TOOL tribute band with the guy that I mentioned earlier and I think that will be the show I'll try using it on (since Adam Jones uses a LP and has that big rock sound). I think I can make this guitar work for that setting too.

About Sweetwater.com - guys, they offer a payment deal where you can just split your payments into 3 months. No financing or anything, you're just splitting it up. There is a $25 fee to do this, and they ship you the guitar after the first payment.

Summary: The PRS is probably going to be my go-to guitar for most of my applications. While it won't completely replace my Les Paul, it can do everything the LP can do; just in a lighter, easier playing neck, with a few more pickup setting options to choose from.
