I have never been much for effects
I too keep effects to a minimum. My favorite tones come from my fingers, guitars and amps. But i do appreciate that many big name guitarists are known for using them. So I delve into some and having stumbled on this video I was curious if anyone else has experimented with this technique.

It makes perfect sense. Especially when you are recording.
Lay a track down clean, then duplicate it with different effects on separate tracks then mix and match.
That's different from playing live, but still the way to think about it IMHO.

Don’t fall down that rabbit hole
Unfortunately, I never got that memo. I think I have over twenty pedals on my board at the house right now. If I gig, tho I just use my FM9.

Damn. If I had this I wouldn't be going down an effects pedal rabbit hole either!

Digital is not for everybody. It is getting better every year but it is a feel thing more than a sound thing. When I play just through the amp or through analog preamps and pedals, I feel like my playing is connected through the amp. With some digital models, you can start to lose that. It is hard to explain but it is a real thing.
I have an HX Stomp, but I am just using it mostly for effects like pitch for downtuning, chorus, EQ, etc. I will use some of the preamps for some different drive sounds, but I don't mess with the amp/cab models much except at home playing around. I feel my Sansamp and tube DI box sound better out front than any kind of amp/cab models.
If I was going to say screw it and just go to a little digital box, I would get the Darkglass Anagram. It is the best sounding and feeling modeling I've come across. But, at $1,200, I'm just don't see the point when my board and toys I have now work so well.

I bought a helix a couple of times and sold it both times. Same with Kemper. I had a stomp on my board and recently sold it for a vp4. Love my Axe Fx 3 and my FM9 tho. It is by far the best modeler I've ever used, but I still love playing thru my tube amps and pedals tho. Nothing like playing thru a Bassman and Super Reverb in stereo.

I dig that. I have a Behringer amp that has a bunch of amp models built in as well as a ton of effects that I just like to have fun with. But there's nothing like my little orange OR15 turned up just enough to get the tubes cooking, running through a 2X12 cab loaded with Celestion V30s and enjoying the warm harmonics and overtones it creates. Can really feel it through the fingers.

Speaking of pedalboards, heads up on a cool Black Friday special on Amazon. I rolled the dice on one of these a couple years ago when I needed a small board for bare necessities stomps.
While the plug-in power (an 18V wall wart) is flimsy, neither it nor any aspect of the product has ever let me down. The board is sturdy, the carry bag is quality, and the onboard power supply is quiet with multiple common voltage offerings. On sale nearly half off right now.
I ordered a second one this morning so I can put fuzz/OD/dist boxes on one board for my Super Reverb, modulation, delay and verb boxes on the other board for my Boogie. Or link both boards together when I'm feeling saucy.
