Completely disagree. Those Squiers sound fantastic for the money. If you really are having tone issues, by a used set of Mexi-Fender pups on ebay for $60. Epiphone Les Pauls play absolutely horrible and have terrible fret work. Im a Les Paul guy over a strat guy and I still dont like the Epiphones. If you want dual-humbucker guitar, get a PRS SE model. They are WAYYY better quality and value than an Epiphone ever will be.

I agree with this. I know many friends who started with squires. They sound mediocre, but they're also among the cheapest guitars one can purchase. The wood, frets, and tuners really aren't bad for an entry level guitar, so just by upgrading the pick-ups, you can really mod the guitar to your liking. I've had many friends do so over the years.

Epiphones are garbage, plane and symbol. They're like a cheap kit car. They sorta look like the real thing, but they don't drive like it and they're made of cheap materials. Seriously, take a close look at an epi. That beautiful flameburst wood grain finish is actually just a sticker, not even kidding. You can tell if you look at it long enough. I play on an MVG Les Paul. Same price as an Epi, but with actual wood and vastly superior pickups. However, that's probably a little out of your price range (more in the $400-500 range).

You'd be better off with a squire that you can upgrade how you want or with one of these:
Agile AL-2000. These are a cheap Les Paul clone that's half the price of an Epi, but sounds much better, and that wood on top isn't just a sticker. I've never met someone who bought one that was disappointed. They also have some similar models on that site that come with upgraded pups (AL-3010 and 3001) in that $300-400 range.

the sublety of that pun went over your head. They're nothing but a symbol (the Les Paul body type), and the plane I was refering is the plane of the fretboard, which are often a little warped on cheap epis.

It's certainly worth it to spend slightly more money for such a big upgrade in quality.
