Just bought a Yamaha FG800 off of FB marketplace.
Looks and sounds good tho I’m a beginner and know nothing.
My question is should I bring it to a shop to check the action? Guy I bought it from said action was fine and a good guitar for beginners. (Also read its pretty good for beginners).

Post pics.

Side view. Show the strings with a small ruler with small measurements perpendicular to fretboard at the 12th fret.

Million hacks for checking it too. I think a quarter should barely slip under the strings at the 12th. I could be screwing that up though.

Damn it where is Fret Shack. We need a Bat Signal for him. LOL

I would go ahead and bring the guitar in... just to be sure the action is indeed set up properly and a set of fresh strings.

A properly set up guitar will make a world of difference.

I'm no fret shack, so hopefully he'll chime in. But I would go with this.

Now, for a beginner, playing open chords on the first 3 frets, this probably won't matter that much, but as you get better and move up (down?) the neck, it'll be aggravating. Just my .02

seems way too low.

eta: I'm thinking it's more around 3/32nds for low-E @ 12th.... for a minimum.

Maybe that was for neck relief? After you capo at the first fret?

I said I may have had it wrong.

The first stop for assessing action is neck relief, or lack of it.

Fret the low E at F1 (you can use a capo) and push down the string to touch F15. If the gap between the string and the fret tops at F6-8 is more than one nickel's thickness, you likely have some degree of excessive relief. If there is no gap at all, you have no relief or a backbow. All three of those states are adjusted by the truss rod. Unless you have experience with that, you probably want a tech to adjust it.

That's the first action assessment step. If you pass the nickel test, I'll go the second assessment step.

My first "decent" guitar was a Yamaha FG830,

Yamaha guitars are consistently good and usually a great bang for your buck, especially when purchased used like you did.
