Turned 18 right before Nevermind ... so was in the heart of it.
Some other contributors to the more underground "grunge" world: Babes In Toyland, Luna Chicks, Melvins, Screaming Trees were amazing then, Mudhoney ... of course L7 was bringing it. Rollins Band was incredible then ... Helmet. Sort of fringe grunge I suppose.
Some epic shows then .. Soundgarden and Pearl Jam in Houston comes to mind in 92'. Beastie Boys/Rollins Band/Cypress Hill in NOLA around the same time with Iggy Pop making a cameo. The Lollapaloozas then were solid. Pearl Jam at Tips right after Ten came out. Nirvana at UNO a couple of months before he died.

People like to compare and rate all of these bands from that era but I loved all of them for the original sound that they created. Music had gotten stale at the end of the 80’s and these guys exploded onto the scene with fresh new music that was basically a mashup of 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s influences.

There's a fun oral history about 80s hair metal - Nöthin' But a Good Time: The Uncensored History of the '80s Hard Rock Explosion - and it goes into the sea change that happened when grunge took over and pushed bands like Warrant, Slaughter, Trixter out of the way. (Even though those groups started waning in popularity in 1990-early 1991) There's kind of a feeling that Kurt Cobain personally destroyed all of those bands. But a lot of those bands dug Nirvana - months before Nevermind came out, Skid Row wanted them as the opening act for their fall tour. And apparently, the guys in Soundgarden really liked the first Poison album.

I was in high-school as well (class of '96). STP and AIC are my favs now, but back then I probably liked Nirvana and PJ a little more. And, of course, got to give Weezer a shout out. (Many other great bands back then as well, but these are just the more commercial ones).
EDIT: And, yes, STP was from CA, not Seattle. I still lump them in with grunge, though.

I love the strat rock.
Michael Stipe had a crush on Eddie and allegedly made passes at him.
ETA- some quote like "When did you know you had made it?" --- "When Michael Stipe tried to frick me at the Uptown Lounge"
