I think we are all aware of who they are. I prefer Love and Rockets to them.Peter Murphy is a complete dick head. Ash and J made Bahuaus's sound. Peter just sang like a vampire-whale and it worked. Matter of fact, some of their best work was done when Peter had pneumonia and David J and Daniel took the reign on 80 percent of everything in the studio (I believed this occurred twice?)
I respect their work and yes, they are godfathers, but I could never listen to one of their albums from start to finish. I would much rather see The Mision_UK or Fields of Nephilim live, too, as I can listen to their whole catalogue (for the most part).
Peter Murphy, meanwhile, continues to lash out at fans for recording his concerts with cell phones (I understand his disdain; but, they are YOUR fans, idiot) and because a security guard at one of his late 2016 shows was eating a hamburger, Murphy -- a vegan -- lashed out and said he would not perform unless the guy was fired. Sorry, not going to give him many props. And didn't he live in Istanbul? Wonder how that's playing out for him.

I started listening to KLSU then hitting whatever Xanthus was before it was Xanthus.
I remember the moment walking into the Bengal for the first time, saw a couple of goth asian chicks..well, they had the hardened egg white hair mohawks anyway...doing this weird dance together to 'rock me amadeus'.
completely mesmerized. this must have been 1984 or 1985.
KLSU turned me onto ultravox and the whole 4AD catalog, the church, charlie sexton, jesus & mary chain, the damned, etc etc.
then i had a life-changing moment walking into the record store next to the chimes as they were playing 'how soon is now?' and seeing the little 'goth' barefoot chicks walking around LSU campus wearing their black flag tshirts.
the screaming sirens then played a gig at one of the local bars (i'll be your loveslave), and i saw skinny puppy and severed heads at niemans.
from there i spent most of my time upstairs at woody's record shop listening to the sisterhood, big audio dynamite, red lorry yellow lorry, japan/sylvian, strawberry switchblade, revolting cocks, scraping feotus, durutti column (amazing), legendary pink dots, etc etc.
so mostly word-of-mouth and KLSU and hanging out with woody dumas.
moved to houston in 89-90 and immediately starting going to the 2 record stores on lower westhiemer near montrose and hitting all the local clubs.
joined and helped moderate a listserv starting in 1992 that featured Projekt records and got into fields of the nephilim at that time along with stina nordenstam, bel canto, the cranes, etc etc.
my 2 best friends in houston were these hardcore goth girls and i had some of the best times of my life being young, single and going out every night of the week while they drug me all over the place. i would stay out until 4 am or so literally sleep for an hour, hit taco cabana for a 99 cent breakfast burrito and head into work. start it all over about 8pm the next night.
we knew what night of the week every bar had 99 cent well drinks.
met siouxsie at a bar and talked to her for over an hour (i've posted the pic here a few times) and everything was starting to shift from the goth to grunge so slowly the bands i would see live shifted to the whole seattle crew who seemed to take the express train to houston about once a month..nirvana, mud honey, melvins, L7, hole, etc all played for free at least once at emos back in the day as they were starting to make it big.
i think most of how everyone heard about this stuff was literally just being around DJs who travelled or had contact with others who played the musi around the country.
we didn't need no stinkin' internet.

When I think of the best Goth has to offer (and I do not think THAT many American listeners really know who these guys are...and they need some recognition for what they were):
Fields of Nephilim (1988)
^If you enjoy Type O and all of that stuff that came out in the 90's, then you should enjoy this. Crank it up.

I will fight you IRL!
Peter Murphy solo >>> Love and Rockets
Actually I feel them breaking up worked out best for all involved.

I wish we could have a beer. I am just going to dig some points from this very cool autobio and answer/ask.
In my opinion and musically, it does not get better. Which is your favorite album? I'd have to say their debut "Of Skin and Hearts" is mine..."Sisters" is actually on my vinyl. I like The Blurred Crusade a ton, too..."To Be in Your Eyes" was almost my wedding song, but it seemed to be more about a break-up; wife was not going to go for it. Starfish is absolutely their Abbey Road, but I wish they would have added a couple of more B sides to the album (Texas Moon, in particular). I also love the song "Dome" on Priest=Aura.
I love the Church -- love Steve and Marty and Peter...miss Ploog on the hats.
Okay, I am jealous.
I am a recent discoverer of this band and they are right up my alley. "Chance" is just a bad arse tune that should be on anyone's playlist -- if they love hard rock or goth or whatever.
In which sense of the word do you mean?
I was very young, but this and "Let's Go All the Way" by Sly Fox (who I mistook for Prince originally) and Ministry's "Everyday is Halloween" were three tracks that I credit for helping me separate the club sound from the radio sound.
For me as a young adult, however, Ministry, NIN, Skinny Puppy, KMFDM, Pigface, Frontline Assembly (huge credit to "Mindphaser" for helping me understand how awesome that music would become; Front 242's "Religion, too). Then, I was able to better understand The Cure, The Church, Depeche Mode, and the bigger bands, if you will. Then, I started making playlists that have remnants of new wave, post punk, goth, and even some dream pop. In other words, Xymox, The Cult, The Cure, and The Telescopes may be on one mixtape/CD...throw in some TYpe O and some Engineers...a little Church and Nitzer Ebb and voila.
Anyway, good stuff as usual man.

Oh you too? Meet me at Sonic to get some knuckles checked.
Don't know what color your eyes are baybee but your hair is long and brown...
Admit it, at that point is when you wanted to kill yourself for having been a fan. I'm downvoting both on principle.

"Witch House" genres are the modern "GOTH". And I love them..
White Ring - Roses
Sidewalks and Skeletons - GOTH
CHAINLESS - Ancient Ruins
MR.KITTY - XIII
At one time I would consider Crystal Castles in this darker genre. Especially post chip tunes.
As someone who grew up after the popularity of these bands I looked at them as emo. They had a weak sound to all of them but IMO that genre just evolved into a darker sound.

Maybe back in '86/'87 but when have they done anything recent as good as Ninth which is a nod back to Bauhaus or Lion which was produced by Killing Joke's bassist so it has a huge Killing Joke vibe to it. Some of his best work.
Love & Rockets last go was some electronic dance crap 20 year ago.
