The were bigger than Tool in 97, headlined Lollapalooza.

They were massive

Honestly, I still enjoy large parts of Experience. It holds up much better than their more pop-oriented work that came after.

I got the poison! I got the remedy!!!!

Nothing sounded like that in 1995 (when I first heard it).

Just went through, experience, the Jilted and Fat of the Land in awesome headphones.

Rediculous good shite, so glad dirty UK techpop went mainstream in the 90s, gave me much nostalgia and made me miss that decade

Prodigy was hand picked to be the next big mainstream thing and, well they were a bit too eccentric for the masses.

I think America just wasn’t ready for this type of music to go mainstream....

They’d fare much better now with edm being all the rage.

I remember when "Firestarter" hit MTV (actually MTV2...recall how they took over music video duties basically?) In early 97 and it went over well, but music had no identity as it had a year prior. A year prior, MTV was still in the indie alt rock stage (year 4 of 4) and played Spacehog, the Toadies, No Doubt, Marilyn Manson, Silverchair, The Rentals, Luscious Jackson, Bush, etc. There was no Prodigy and it was all rock.

By 97, we had Prodigy, Tool, Jamiroqai, the Spice Girls, Fionna Apple, the Back Street Boys, Death in Vegas, Master P, Moby, Hanson...where the hell were we??
Firestarter was sort of a revelation for EDM to go mainstream, followed by Chemical Bros. and the Crystal Method. Meanwhile, pop music branched off...boy band music branched off and hip hop began its enormous climb. The alternative music we had known just a year prior was GONE. I think the Prodigy had a huge hand in that -- like it or not.

It’s been mainstream for close to a decade now with zero sign of slowing down.

Ehhh, Moby was really the first one that brought electronic music to the mainstream in America, but even then, edm (or whatever you want to call it) didn’t get huge until like 2010 with afrojack’s take over control and Calvin Harris’ early hits.

In between, you had prodigy and a bunch of other acts that had varied levels of success in the electronic genre. But nobody got close to the later popularity of Calvin Harris or avicii.

I think with moby, there was a stigma that electronic music was cheesy or girly (all the cool kids were listening to rap or nu-metal). I will say that prodigy’s music didn’t have that same stigma. So, maybe you can argue that prodigy attracted new fans to the genre.

Of course, all different types of electronic music has been popular in Europe for decades now.
