A friend of mine has an SG that he doesn't play anymore. He put it on Craigslist to sell. A guy contacted him offering to trade a 2008 alpine white MIA Strat for it. The Strat has locking tuners and '69 custom shop pickups. I'm not sure what year the SG is but it's fairly new. He asked me if it was a good trade or not. I told him to jump on it. What do you guys think?

I should also add that he doesn't currently own a Stratocaster.

I like Gibson's a lot more than Strats so I'd do it

If the SG is a bound and crowned Standard series or similar, I'd likely not do the trade. If the SG is a "faded" or "studio" series, I would do it in a heartbeat.

Strats are pretty boring. SG’s are where it’s at.

Exactly. My brother has one of the low-line SGs and I don't like it. A nicer one like what Angus Young typically plays is a whole different story. Difference just by looking is no neck binding and dot inlays vs. trapezoids. Open coil pickups vs. metal covers too.

And I don't romanticize Gibson so a MIA strat would be a pretty good score regardless IMO.

I'd do it. But I've never picked up an SG that I liked. Except for one that was over $2000 I believe at GC. It was nice but I'd rather a Les Paul for my 2 grand plus.

Sounds like a good trade. Have your buddy do his research and make sure resale numbers match.

Strats are more versatile and I prefer the sound of them over an SG

The SG to me always felt like a top heavy log.

Strat all day. Not hating a well balanced LP but the SG just never did it for me

The reason he doesn't play the SG is that the neck profile doesn't fit his hand. I can understand that, it's a thin neck and I like the neck to fill up my hand. As does he.

I've asked what model SG he has. (answer: standard)

A new American Standard Strat is about $1400 and the locking tuners and pickups add some value. My buddy felt like that was a comparable trade money-wise.

I bought my '87 SG Standard for $400 in 1989. Black with 3 layer PG, Unbound neck and body with ebony (not cherrywood) fretbd with dot pearl inlays. Have yet to find another just like it from that year.

I broke the headstock off back in 2000, and Tim and Tommy fixed her up nicely...sadly, I lost the original receipt with the SN on it last year, and the original headstock is long gone...so I can never sell her without a yuge hit.

The deal is done. He decided on the Strat. Came in a nice tweed case too.
