Its a tough one, but I have to go with Nas. Jigga has one of the best discographies of any rapper to ever live but, like it has been said many times before, Illmatic is the greatest hip hop album of all time. That, Stillmatic and Ether, were he absolutely killed Jay Z, are what put Nas over the top.

Jay-Z
Way more consistency over a longer period of time. NAS has to be in the top 10 but even MTV had Jay-Z as the #1 greatest all time. NAS was not even in that discussion, just saying.
Reasonable Doubt
Volume 2
Volume 3
Dynasty
Blueprint
Blueprint 2
Black Album
This is over 15 years of platinum records. I'm not even listing the other 4 solo albums that makes 11 platinum albums. He also has another 3 platinum albums that are collaborations (that makes 14 platinum albums) 50 million records sold world wide.

Nas - only hip hop artist other than Tupac and Biggie that I can actually visualize what he is saying. For me what gives him the edge is a combination of lyrics + topics he raps about.

quote:And since when did MTV know or care about music. Huge Jay fan here but Nas is the better MC. Jay may have a better overall catalog but Nas' catalog holds it own. And record sales doesn't make you a better artist it just means you have a sound that is more easy to digest for the masses. Plus Nas made Illmatic, the greatest hip hop album ever and second place isn't even close. Nas is just a better overall MC. Lyrically he is better than Jay. He touches on more social issues than Jay does. Plus, besides for a few moments on American Gangsta, Jay's music since The Black Album has been lackluster. Like I said Jay is one of my all time favorites but Nas is just the better artist. How Nas still get overlooked by some people is insane to me. He has a strong claim for greatest of all time along with Biggie and Rakim. I would put Jay ride outside of that top 3. Nas' Life is Good album is an amazing hip hop album. Jay isn't putting out nearly the same quality of music right now. All Jay can do now is balla rap with Kanye. Great club music, very little substance.
MTV had Jay-Z as the #1 greatest all time.

Jay-Z for sure. Nas has like a one good album per ten year average.

Life is Good is a pretty outstanding album in my opinion, came out this year too. And it doesn't matter when his last great album was, he made the GREATEST rap album of all time with Illmatic.

It may not matter when, but the quantity matters and Jay-Z has put out more great albums.
quote:Making the greatest album doesnt make him the best, we're taking into account the whole discography and IMO Jay's is better.
he made the GREATEST rap album of all time with Illmatic.
