Flatwound Bass strings:

Any bassists use them?
I was an avid round wound bass string user since I was 12, but have recently started using flatwounds.
I honestly can say that I won't ever go back to roundwounds. The tone of the flatwounds are unmatched IMO. I was skeptical for a long time but a friend of mine that plays them turned me onto them a couple months ago and I haven't turned back since.
Right now, I'm playing la Bella's and rotosounds. The la bellas are the type that James Jameson and carol Kaye played (Motown, beach boys)

I think I buy more roundwound out of habit. I do like the punch of flatwounds, though.

I have flatwounds on my musicman and a hollow body bass and they sound fantastic.
Using a sansamp and an orange terror bass head does the trick too
Also, the flatwounds are expensive, but they last forever. You could play the same set for a year or more.

I love old bass strings. That "dead" tone is far superior imo. Im the exact opposite with guitar

I think that bass tone is about like snare selection & tuning - the only people who really care are bassists & drummers. (I love snare tone discussions but non-drummers are like WTF dude?) The more esoteric guitar tone searches fall into this, too.

Jamerson is the man. 8 year old strings with one finger could lay down tracks that people remember to this day.
Bass strings are ridiculously expensive to experiment with. There are just so many options and the end result also depends on your specific gear... It drives me nuts.

Just dropped $47 for a set of la bellas the other day that didn't fit my new bass

That is my fear every time I open a new pack. Sometimes it is worth the risk though... I have a beater Squier P that sucked until I put a set of medium gauge Cleartone roundwounds on them. All of a sudden, it my favorite bass to play. Maybe I don't need that new American Standard P after all. For another few weeks anyway.
