They don't do full band improvisation. Not in either of the shows I saw. One was the first Bonnaroo. I've got a recording of that performance. If you disagree, point me to the song where it happens.
A jam is more than just an extended guitar solo while the rest of the band vamps along. Lots of mainstream bands do that. Journey did that. I'm talking about a musical conversation. An exploration. What is Widespread's Dark Star?

Nice question, and love that you attended the first Bonnaroo.
The link above is one of my favorite shows. Check out the Holden and Papas.
Many consider this show their Cornell
Huntsville
Check out the:
06: Tie Your Shoes > 07:41
07: Arleen > 14:20
08: Vacation > 09:33
on top of that, you really can't go wrong with a show from 1999. That year they really stretched out just about every song in their catalog.
11/27/99 Hampton Coliseum, Hampton, VA
1: Chilly Water, Walkin' (For Your Love) > Dyin' Man, Conrad, This Part Of Town, L.a., I'm Not Alone, Happy Child > Superstition* > Coconut*
2: Ain't Life Grand > Driving Song, Tall Boy > Papa's Home > Drums** > The Wind Cries Mary > Papa's Home > Driving Song, Flat Foot Flewzy***
E: Swamp* > Fishwater*
* with Dirty Dozen Brass Band
** with Terrence Higgins on percussion
*** with Roger Lewis on baritone saxophone
[First 'This Part Of Town'; 'Coconut' appears on 'Another Joyous Occasion'; 'Train Kept A Rollin'' jam after 'Ain't Life Grand'; "China/Rider Transition" teases after 'Drums'; The Dirty Dozen Brass Band opened]
Hampton, VA

Allman Brothers, even though I often think of them as a blues band b/c I love their bluesy-sounding stuff.
Yeah some people put My Morning Jacket in that category. I love lots of their stuff and they play them on Jam On, but they're more alt-country.

Resurrected this thread to suggest Acoustic Syndicate. Three brothers are the core of the band. I believe they all work on a family farm in North Carolina, play gigs and occasionally put out a record. I have been a fan for probably 20 years.
